(Photo by Ben Wolfe) Three US Speedskaters Quit; May Hurt America’s Chances OSLO, Norway—Li? 5 )—A colossal snafu involving three U. S. skaters and the parent American Amateur Speedskating Union may have crippled American chances in the world speedskating championships starting Sunday in Moscow. The sources here said that two of the three U. S. team members, Gordon Rudolph of Northbrook, 111., and Paul Nelson of Minneap olis, had left the team because the parent body failed to give them backing. Only Rudolph’s brother, Eddie, would represent the U. S. in the Lenin Stadium rink against the world’s best speed- skaters, the source said. Last Monday, Phil O. Krumm of Milwaukee, secretary-treasurer of the organization, said that Ed Rudolph and Nelson would repre sent the U. S. in the world meet. He did not mention Gordon Ru dolph. Sqd. 1ft First; Sqd. 3 Second Two errors were made in the Feb. 8 issue of the Battalion re garding the current overall stand ings in Class A intramurals. The corrected standings in that divi sion are: Sqd. 10 first with 375 points, Sqd. 3 second with 365, Sqd. 6 with 350 and Sqd. 11 fourth with 345. F-l, which had been reported first with 475 points, is actually ninth. Weigh-ins for intramural wres tling were held on Monday and Wednesday of this week and the competition will begin Monday. A wrestling demonstration will be held at 5 p.m. today in the wres tling room of the addition to the coliseum so that students may be come familiar with rules and the conduct of matches. Director of ,Intramurals Charles E. McCandless announced yester day that practice firing for intra mural rifle will begin Wednesday so that each outfit will be able to learn the rules and conduct the matches. Competition will begin on Feb. 26. He also pointed out that Class A and C volleyball play will begin on the 26th. McCandless also said that about 15 entries were made for the open gymnastics meet scheduled for the first week in March. A demon stration of the required routines was held yesterday. He cited that students will probably be allowed to make on-the-spot entries when the meet begins. The gym meet will be judged by Coach Henry H. Walton and mem bers of the gymnastics team. Medals will be given to the indi vidual winners. The events will include trampoline, tumbling, rings, side horse, long horse, parallel bars and horizontal bar. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer Byron Nelson became 50 years old the other day. Hemry Ransom, A&M’s golf coach, wort the Texas PGA at 51. Gus Moreland won a seniors tournament at Peoria, 111. What does all this mean ? It. means that Texas’ most glamorous era in golf has run its course. Think back 25 yaars ago— Nelson,- Ben Hogan, Lloyd Man- grum, Jimmy Demaret and Ran som wei’e making Texa^ the most famous state in the isation with their professional golf exploits. Moreland was the toast of the amateur world and tJiere were others like Spec Goklman and Jack Munger to give the state a boost. Well Nelson, Demaret, Moreland and’ Ransom are 50 years old or better, Hogan is 49, soon will be 50, and Mangrum is 47 and virtu ally retired from championship golf. Betty Jameson and Babe Zaha- rias were winning the amateur championships among the women. Both became top professionals, too. The Babe is dead, Miss Jame son still follows the pro golf trail but doesn’t win tournaments any more. A great era has gone and there may never be another one to match it even with all the fine young golfers now plodding along the trail. But golf still is big stuff in Texas. This year it will offer an even $200,000 in prize money—the all-time high for the state. Last year the total was around $190,000. The reason for the in crease is because the Houston Classic will be for $50,000 this year. It was $40,000 in 1961. The other tournaments will keep their prize money at the same figures. Houston starts the golf parade this time, its tournament sched uled for April 19-22. The Texas Open at San Antonio, with $30,000 in prize money, is set for April 26-29. May 10-13 the $40,000 Colonial National Invitation comes up at Fort Worth. May 24-27 the Dallas Civitan Open, a top women’s tournament, will be held with $10,000 on the line. June 1-3 the Babe Zaharias Open will be staged at Beaumont with $7,500 up for grabs. The Texas PGA, which carries a $5,000 tag, will be at Corpa Christi in August. Aug. 31-Sept. 3 the Dallas Opa with $30,000 prize money, is scheo. uled for the Oak Cliff Countij Club. In October or November Sy Antonio is expected to again ka its Civitan Open for the wouq with $7,500 in prize money. The golf show closes out November with the $20,000 Golds Triangle Invitation tounamentj Beaumont. A Memo f/towt/... Mr. 4 “Life insurance is largely a matter of dollars and sense.” ’Albert W.
