Kollie White Coliseum. The Shorthorns won a squeaker from the Fish, 80-75. (Photo by Ben Wolfe) Fish Outscored By Yearlings, 80-75 By VAN CONNER Battlaion Assistant Sports Editor After a breif flicker of hope with 1:39 left in the game, the A&M Fish basketball team had to bow to a last minute offensive drive by the Texas Yearlings and lost their sixth contest, 80-75. The Yearlings led by a respect- abel margin through most of the game. But later in the second half the Fish momentarily caught fire and threw a score into Texas. With exactly two minute left in the game Paul Timmons dropped a short jump shot from the side to tie the game 72-72. Steve Car ter of the Shorthorns quickly add ed two more for Texas. An all-important play follow ed with 1:39 left in the contest when Tim Timmerman scored two to retire the game and was fouled in the act by formidable John Paul Fultz of the Yearlings. Fultz left the game for excess fouling and Timmerman sank the free shot to put the Fish ahead for the first time since early in the game, 75-74. Carter and Dean Greenwood hit six points worth of pay dirt for the Shorthorns in the next minutes, however, and the Fish had to give in. Timmerman and Fultz shared the game high-scoring honors with 21 points each. Timmerman outdid his Texas adversary in the re bounding department, however, and was high man with 13. Free Throws Give Ags Win, 54-48 By LARRY SMITH Battalion Sports Editor A&M’s favorite basketball team —the Aggies—had one of their coldest nights of the season but they won another “must” victory over their arch-rivals—the Long horns of Texas, 54-48, last night in G. Rollie White Coliseum. With the victory, the Aggies regained a share of the South west Conference lead as SMU de feated Texas Tech in Lubbock, G8-G3. Now the Mustangs, Red Raiders and the Aggies are tied with identical SWC records, G-3. The Aggies could hit only 14 times from the floor out of 46 attempts for 30.4 per cent, but the free throws meant victory as A&M (54) FG FTA-FT RB PF TP Broussard 5 19-15 10 2 25 B. The Long horns were not much better in field goal shooting as they made good on 18 out of 50 for 3G per cent. Broussard Scores 25 Carroll Broussard, the Aggies’ brilliant forward, was almost all the attack for A&M as he took game honors with 25 points— nearly half of his team’s points. Fifteen of these points came from An invitation to shape your own future... — — Where - K you can iSBilSI# the charity line as Broussard hit on 15 out of 19 free tosses. Texas’ junior forward, Ron Weaks, was high man for the Steers as he dropped 13 points through the hoop. The contest was slow beginning as the referees were on top of every play. A total of 50 fouls were called during the game, but an oddity was' that only two players fouled out— one for each team. Many of the fouls were argued to the utmost, mostly for the Ag-gies side. An overflow crowd of 8,500 watched as the Aggies won their 20th consecutive home game. Winning Quinet? Ag Coach Bob Rogers and Texas Coach Hal Bradley never could seem to find the “hot” five and both benches were cleared before the contest was over. Texas jumped off to an early lead, but the largest margin' it could muster was 4-1. Then with the foul shooting of Broussard, the Aggies final pulled steadily ahead. At the intermission, A&M lead, 26-20. In the second half the Steers gradually started catching up with the Cadets. With 13:28 left in the game, Texas’ Jimmy Brown hit on a turn jump and the game was knotted at 30-30. Once more Broussard pulled his team out of reach from the free throw line. The lead by the Aggies stayed at about six points until the final 48 seconds of the game. Thirteen points were scored in these last seconds and at the end, A&M had revenged an earlier loss this sea son to the Longhorns. In the rebound department, ead team grabbed 43. Broussard w high for A&M with 10 while Fisher pulled 11 off the boati for Texas. Runner-up to Broussard in ti scoring column for the Aggies Bejinie Lenox who hit for points. Saturday night in G.
