(Photo fires for two points in the Rice-A&M game by Ben Wolfe) last Tuesday night. Windham made 17 Minor League Decline Shown By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer A look at the professional base ball situation in Texas shows just how the minor leagues have fallen. Only five clubs will go to the post in April and Texas will have only six pro clubs all told, includ ing its first major league entry— Houston- The fall of minor league baseball in Texas appears to have come in cycles of seven years. In 1948 Texas was at its all- time high with 36 minor league clubs—five in the Texas League, eight in the Big State, one in the Arizona-Texas, eight in the Lone Star, six in the West Texas-New Mexico and eight in the Longhorn. Seven years later the total had shrunk to 21—a loss of 15. In 1954 there were five clubs in the Texas, eight in the Big State, one in the Arizona-Texas, one in the Evangeline League (Port Arthur), five in the Longhorn and one in the Sooner State. (Gainesville). Here seven years later there are four in the Texas League, one in the American Association and Houston, which is in the National League. Thus 15 more clubs bit the dust in the seven years that elapsed from 1955 through 1961/ This year there will be no Sopho more League, which had two Texas clubs.—El Paso and Alpine—in 1961. The American Association will have only Dallas-Ft. Worth since Houston has gone into the majors. The Texas League will have Amarillo, San Antonio, Aus tin and El Paso. "There has been much talk lately that baseball is losing its position as the national pastime and that football is the No. 1 sport now. The above figures would indicate that this assertion is quite correct. While baseball has gone down rapidly in the last 15 years foot ball has progressed. The Texas League is one of the few minor leagues left in this part of the country and it has had to reach out and take clubs from an other league in order to survive. El Paso and Albuquerque, in the Sophomore League last season, now are in the Texas League. Victoria and Harlingen were in the Texas League in 1961. Both pulled out, with Victoria moving to Ardmore and Harlingen g-oing to Victoria. Now even Ardmore is gone. The main reason for the demise of the minors has been putting the accent on the major leagues through television and expansion. Now the cities want to either be in the majors or not in baseball at all. There will have to be major leagues all over the country if baseball is to return to its top place.
