Dr. Robert G. Cochran, head of the Department of Nuclear Engi neering, outlined possible future uses of nuclear energy in the na tion's industry. “In spite of inefficiency of pre sent nuclear devices generating electrical power, reactor power plants can now compete economic ally with fossil fuels — coal or petroleum — in areas where fuel costs exceed 35 cents per million BTU's such as on the East coast,” Cochran said. Noting that many persons are contending nuclear energy should be used now for electrical power in order to conserve fossil fuels, Cochran said there is now 575 million-billion IlTU’s of energy a- vailable in known reserves of fis- ssionable material using current technology. “This could be increased from 575 to about a million if nuclear scientists and engineers can de velop better techniques for utiliz ing fissile material,” he added. “With an ample supply of ima ginative, well-educated scientists and engineers, this and other use ful goals can be achieved,” Coch ran said. Hhe reminded them that “pro bably at no time in the history of the world has a field of know ledge blossomed so quickly. “In less than two decades we have tried to develop a few rudi mentary principles into a relative ly useful and mature body of knowledge.” The three-week executive deve lopment course is being conducted for the tenth year. Businessmen, military officers and engineers are sent from industry throughout the nation to attend lectures in ad ministration and management, fi nance, new technical trends and human relations. Stevenson s t r o n g 1 y endorsed yesterday purchase of half a $200-million United Nations bond issue. He pictured it as a move bolstering United States security and strengthening an institution he said had blunted Communist thrusts in Asia and Africa. The U. S. ambassador to the United Nations, expressing confi dence of repayment, told senators installments returned coxild be ap plied toward meeting annual U.S. assessments. Even if the United States had to give instead of lend the $100 million “it would be worth the cost many times over” to keep the United Nations alive, he said, and added: “If the United Na tions, even in its present imper fect form, were ever substracted from the arsenal of our dipolma- LEGAL HOLIDAY Monday, February 12- 1962, being a Holiday, in ob servance of Lincoln’s Birthday, the undersigned will observe that date as a Holiday and not be open for business. Kennedy’s case for helping the United Nations liquidate a deficit stemming largely from its Congo operations. Soviet bloc members have refused to pay their share of supporting troops there. He rattled off a list of what he considered U. N. succeses, parti cularly use of U.N. troops to help establish a unifed, independent Congo. Without them there would have been a direct confrontation of the great powers, he said. ELECTION (Continued From Page I) 4: Billy A. (Bill) Stasny, incum bent.
