With 13:52 left to play, the Cougars held a commanding 11- point lead, only to see the Aggies dwindle the margin to only two points just 1:05 left. Don Scverak and Folly Malone led the winners with 25 and 23 points, respectively, as both quin tets finished the tussle with 47 per cent shooting averages. Sophomore Bennie Lennox led the Aggies with 18 counters, fol lowed closely by Carroll Broussard with 17. SPORTS SECTION Broncos Fall To Travis, Tied For 1st Coach Peck Vass’ Bryan Broncos fell Tuesday night to the Rebels of Austin Travis, 54-51, and re mained deadlocked with Austin McCallum for first place in the District 13-AAAA basketball race. The Broncos, who saw an 18- game winning streak end last week, now stand 5-2 in district play. Tuesday’s Travis win was their first in seven starts. High-scoring guard Neal Thomp son was forced to miss first half of Travis tilt because of sick ness that has plagued the Bronco squad all week. The Rebels went into a stalling offense from the game’s beginning and the Broncos could never re gain the lead. Forward Larry Hemenes took scoring honors for the 20-4 Bi’oncos with 17 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds as no other local could register in double figures. Gilbert Alvarez led the visitors with 16 points, while guard Bubba Joiner scored 13 and center Rusty Wier, 12. Weir also nabbed 14 rebounds. Coach James Stegall’s Colts won a squeaker in the B game, 55-54, with Mike Ritchey hitting 15 points for game scoring honors. Bryan’s Arnold Wall had 14 as did Larry Spillar for Travis. Dan ny Marshall, who scored the game winning points, had eight. SWC ROUNDUP Raicjers, Baylor Notch Triumphs THl Defending champion Texas Tech vaulted into first place in the latest Southwest Conference stand ings with a narrow 69-63 win over always-dangerous Southern Meth odist Tuesday as conference play resumed after semester exams. In the only other conference ac tion, TCU downed Baylor, 69-53. Texas journied to San Antonio to edge Trinity, 95-39, and the Aggies fell to Houston in Houston, 73-69.
