New Magazine Tells of A&M’s Activities, Staff The first edition of “Texas A&M Today” was sent to former stu dents, parents of students and friends of the college last week. The magazine is published by the College Information Office headed by Lee Duewall. “Most colleges .and universities have a magazine of this type, so a quarterly publication such as this is not unique with A&M,” Duewall said. “Texas A&M Today” is not a report; it is intended to feature outstanding activities, people and departments connected with the college, he continued. The winter edition, just released, discusses the new nuclear center soon to be activated. According to the publication the reactor in A&M’s center is the largest in Texas and cost approxi mately one and a half million dollars. Also included is an article on the Century Study, explaining how it was formed, how it works and what its goals are. The final article of the four-page issue threats the growth of the A&M College and its improvement in facilities and education for students. ing laws to acquaint newly-eligible voters with the statutes. In accordance, the Senate last Thursday passed the following resolution: “Realizing that a citizen’s most powerful voice in his government is his vote, the Student Senate urges newly eligible voters to familiarize themselves with the voting laws of the State of Texas, and for all to exercise their voting privilege at every opportunity.” Results of the issues committee study are the following most com mon questions and their answers from W. W. Burley, Brazos County deputy tax assessor-collector: . I will be 21 next year. Should I get a poll tax before Jan. 31, or can I wait until later? Yes, you can wait until later. Your first poll tax will be free and you can get it now or anytime 30 days before an election. You will not be allowed to vote until you reach the age of 21. 2. Should I buy my poll tax in Brazos Coynty or in my home county? If you want to vote only in state and national elections and not local elections, you can * buy a poll tax in a county other than your home county. You will be allowed to vote only in the county w here you bought your poll tax. 3. I live in College Housing and pay no local taxes. Am I quali fied to vote in a local bond elec tion ? No. You must own and pay taxes on property to qualify for such an election. 4. I will be in an active armed service in June. How will this effect my voting privileges? You will be able to vote absentee in the home county which you claim as a permanent address. 5. Who can not vote in Texas? Persons under the age of 21, non-citizens of the United States, people who have not lived in the state for at least one year, people who have not lived in the county in which they want to vote 6 months, or anyone not having a poll tax receipt showing payment before Feb. 1 preceding the elec tion. 6. Who does not have to pay a poll tax? Persons who became 60 years of age prior to Jan. 1, 1961, persons who moved into the state after Jan. 1, 1961, or a citizen who be came 21 after Jan. 1, 1961. 7. How is poll tax money used? The $1.75 is used for the follow ing things: $1 is used to support the public schools, 50 cents goes into state general revenue and 25 cents goes to the county. 8. How do you vote absentee? You may vote absentee not more than 20 or less than 3 days before an election. You may either go by the county clerk’s office during this time or apply for a ballot through the mail. In the case of voting by mail you must mark the ballot in the presence of a notary public and mail it back to the county clerk. 9. I am a student and don’t pay taxes anywhere. Where should I ^Jlte (^xcLunae cinge ‘Serving Texas Aggies’ ore vote ? It would probably be best fot you to vote in your home county, This would allow you to vote in local elections. 10. When is the deadline for buying a poll tax? Poll taxes must be bought be fore midnight, Jan. 31. 11. Can anyone buy my poll tax for me ? A husband or wife can buy their spouse’s poll tax. 12.
