Page 4 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Wednesday, December 6, 1961 California’s Higher Education Poses Discussion Tomorrow Recent developments in higher education and graduate instruction in California will be the subject of a talk by a University of Cali fornia professor tomorrow at 8 p.m. Dr. Byron R. Houston, professor of plant pathology and dean of the graduate division of University of California, will address the A&M faculty, staff, students and the general public. The talk will be presented in the Biological Sciences Lecture Room. Houston has served a dual role as professor and dean since 1958 1 on the Davis campus. He is known by his colleagues as an outstanding general plant pathologist, having contributed to knowledge concerning virus, bac terial, fungal and physiologically induced disorders of plants. In 1951, he helped discover the virus nature of the yellow dwarf disease of gramineous plants. Until then losses were recognized world-wide but numerous fallac ious concepts, as to cause were held. The impact of his discovery has been such that some 100 related research reports have been made in the past 10 years. (AP Wirephoto) gram; Carolyn Garrison, 18, of Silverton, Furniture Design Competition Attracts 16 Aggie Contestants Sixteen A&M students have sub mitted original furniture designs in a $4,000 international furniture design contest sponsored annually by the cotton industry. They are John T. Hargis, G. M. Nelson, John R. Hampton, Clint Noack, Lee E. Dodson, D. R. Brants, Charles E. Still, Joe C. Mills. Edgar A. Marshall Jr., Thomas A. Stafford, Larry Claycomb, James G. Amis, Robert Hoyt Red- wine, James C. Gleason, Cameron Alread Jr. and Dan Ogden. They will be competing against professional furniture stylists and student designers from 19 other colleges and schools. Selection of four prize-winning designs will be made Dec. 15 at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City. Winners, who will receive cash awards of $1,000 each, will be an nounced Jan. 8 during a press luncheon at the American Furni ture Mart in Chicago. An exhibit of outstanding de signs, including the winning en tries will be displayed at the Fur niture Mart for the thousands of furniture buyers and sellers at tending the winter market. At least two contestants from pre vious years have sold their design ideas to furniture manufacturers. The Furniture Design Contest is sponsored by the National Cotton Batting Institute and the National Cotton Council of America to encourage the creation of furniture designs employing cotton batting as filling material. The A&M Graduate School has been awarded 13 additional grad uate fellowships totaling more than $90,000 by the U.S. Depart ment of Health, Education and Welfare. This brings the total to 42 grad uate fellowships authorized for A&M, Dr. Wayne C. Hall, dean of Graduate Studies, said in making the announcement.
