Baker, ’44, has recently announced plans to run for lieuten ant governor of Texas next sum mer. The Aggie senator told newsmen in Austin earlier this month that he has definitely decided to run for the lieutenant governor’s spot and will make a formal announcement later. His election would be sub ject to nomination in the Demo cratic party primary in May. Following his graduation from A&M, he entered the University of Texas Law School where he received his LL.B degree in 1949. One of the most decorated Ag gies in World War II, Baker’s A&M education was interrupted by three years service in the Army Air Force. He flew over 30 com bat missions and holds the Dis tinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clus ters. He was discharged from ac tive duty in 1945 as a first lieu tenant. Baker was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1952, and is now completing his tenth year in the Texas legislature. Born July 25, 1921, in Milliean, Brazos County, he has been a prac ticing lawyer in Houston since 1949. He is a member of the Bap tist church, the Association of Former Students, the Houston, Texas, and American Bar Associa tions and the Masonic Lodge. Experiment Station Honors Helge Ness Contributions of the late Helge Ness, former chief of thej Texas Agricultural Experiment Siation’s Division of Botany and chief berry breeder, were recognized , today when a part of the monthlv staff conference of the station \|as de voted to his achievements, i Highlight of the recognition was the mounting of a plaque on one of the hybrid oak trees which he planted on the campus some half a century ago. He is credited with being the first in America to pro duce hybrid oaks. And his work as a berry breeder produced the foun dation stock for a later developed Ness Berries and still later the Brazos blackberry. , Station Director R. D. Lewis served as master of ceremonies for the recognition program. F. R. Brison and H. T. Blackhurst, both of the horticulture section of the Department of Soil and Crop Sci ences, discussed Helge Ness as an individual and his contributions to agriculture, respectively.
