Freiling, a guard, and Sim mons, a tackle, have been team mates since high school days at San Antonio’s Thomas A. Edison High School. They were elected to their captaincy positions Sunday by their teammates after the com pletion of two days of workouts. Both gridsters, known by their teammates as the “San Antonio Twins,” are two-year lettermen and have been starters in most games since the middle of their sophomore year. The first truancy laws were opposed as infringements on liberty. But as our children return this fall to schools that will mold their growing minds—does a single parent complain? I believe in sound religious education, as well. The molding of the character should keep pace with the molding of the mind. Naturally I never want my government to exercise compulsion in this sacred area. And my Church, while it offers a complete curriculum of religious training, docs so on a free and voluntary basis. But I'm a parent! And, though I find that example and encouragement usually suffice. I’m not above telling Johnny, “YES, SON, YOU HAVE TO GO TO SUNDAY SCHOOL!” As a child begins to see the importance Faith has in our lives and in the strength of our nation . . . you’ll be surprised how quickly this becomes an unquestioned compulsion. The Church :g the greatest fa< n earth for the building of ehai er and good citizenship. It ii factor ter and good citizenship, it is a ■house of spiritual values. The here are four sound why every person should ons attend the services regularly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own Sake. (2) For his children’s sake. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer Baylor’s football team and thou sands of Baptists will be in Dallas next New Year’s Day. It won’t be to celebrate the coming of 1962. It will be to have a high-heeled time in the Cotton Bowl. Which means Baylor will win the Southwest Conference football BULL HEADS DREAM TEAM’ Cadet Pivot Man Named All-SWC Center Jerry Hopkins, a junior from Mart, is the only Aggie on the 1961 pre-season All-Southwest Conference team selected recently by the editors of “Texas Football” magazine. The “dream team,” dubbed one of the finest in recent years, is headed by Baylor’s all-purpose, all- America candidiate, halfback Ron nie Bull. The team is composed of three members of Baylor’s Bears, two each from Rice and Arkansas, and one each from A&M, Texas, TCU and SMU. The Aggies’ Hopkins was named to the center position over David Kristynik of Texas, Bill Hicks of Baylor and Jerry Lineberger of Arkansas. He was described as “a sure- tackling linebacker who beat out a senior and team captain as a soph and will now, as a junior, anchor what one rival coach calls the best defensive line in the con ference. Aggies named to the second team and honorable mention list by the magazine editors were jun ior guard Bull Phillips, second team, and end Russell Hill, tackle Joe Filers, guard Wayne Freiling, and backs Sum Byer and Lee Roy Guffey, honorable mention. The pre-season cream of the crop: FIRST TEAM Ends: Johnny Burrell, Rice; Bob Lane, Baylor. Tackles: Bobby Plummer, TCU; John Cornett, Rice. Guards: Dean Garrett, Arkan sas; Ray Schoenke, SMU. Center: Jerry Hopkins, A&M. Backs: Bobby Ply, Baylor; Ronnie Bull, Baylor; Lance Al- worth, Arkansas; James Saxton, Texas. SECOND TEAM Ends: Jimmy Collier, Arkan sas; Buddy lies, TCU. Tackles: Robert Johnston, Rice; Don Talbert, Texas. Guards: Bull Phillips, A&M; Herby Adkins, Baylor. Center: David Kristynik, Texas. Backs: George McKinney, Ar kansas; Ronnie Goodwin, Baylor; Jerry Cook, Texas; Roland Jack- son, Rice. HONORABLE MENTION Ends: Gene Raesz, Rice; Bob Moses, Texas; Buddy Fults, Texas; Lynn Morrison, TCU; Russell Hill, A&M. Tackles: Joe Eilers, A&M; Lar ry Mullins, Tech; John Childress, Arkansas; George Karam, Rice; John Frongillo, Baylor. Guards: Marvin Kubin, Texas; Ray Pinion, TCU; Danny Brab ham, Arkansas; Lurry Anthony, Rice; Wayne Freiling, A&M. Centers: Bill Hicks, Baylor; Jerry Lineberger, Arkansas. Backs: Ronnie Stanley, Baylor; Mike Gotten, Texas; Jack Collins, Texas; Sonny Gibbs, TCU; Lee Roy Caffey, A&M; Bake Turner, Tech; Coolidge Hunt, Tech; Billy Moore, Arkansas; Sam Byer, A&M; Billy Cox, Rice; Jerry Candler, Rice; Tommy Minter, Baylor. championship after 36 years of frustration, the likes of which col lege athletics have never seen on any other campus. As far as is known, the law of averages hasn’t been repealed despite what suffering Baylor followers may think. The avex - - age will be mighty high for Bay lor, 34 to 1—or rather 1 to 34. Two years Baylor didn’t have foot ball. Most everybody will be happy about it, even Baylor’s foes on the gridiron. It’s heart-breaking to look at those folks with the haunted eyes, with not a glimmer of hope. Baylor won’t be the consensus choice for the championship. Texas or Rice will have that somewhat unenviable spot. This despite the fact that Baylor will have 22 let- tex'men, of which 10 are backs and four of whom will compi’ise one of the finest backfields in the country. The line should be quite ade quate. Despite Baylor’s usual wail that it isn’t deep enough in the forwai’d wall, thus refuting the Baptist song of football “That Good Old Baylor Line,” the men up front appear numerous enough and big enough to get the job done. Strongest In History The conference as a whole will be about the strongest in history. Thex-e will be 167 lettermen at the eight schools, meaning an average of almost 21. Texas Tech has the fewest and there are 16 numeral men at the South Plains school. A&M boasts 26, Southern Method ist 23, Baylor and Rice 22 each, Texas 21, Arkansas 19 and Texas Christian 18. There are more top backs, moi'e fellows capable of competing for All-America honors, than any time in memory. This means Baylor wil be facing teams that like it self will be improved. But it’s a fitting year for the Baptists to come riding out of the wilderness —they can and they did it when the going was the toughest. mjjmmmlMjHlMo mm m -GROCERIES- 12-Oz.
