THE BATTALION my n, i&si Caltf?s:c Station, Texas Page S Doherty’s Career Marked By Distinguished Service Born March 23, 1898, in Houston, Wilfred Thomas Doherty has had a long and distinguished career in the oil industry in Texas. He embarked on his career with the Humble Oil and Eefining Co. in 1922 after studying chemical engineering at A&M. He served with Humble in vari ous capacities until 1938, first as an engineer in the process and research laboratories, as Gulf Coast petroleum engineer - , as en gineer in charge of the petroleum engineering department and last as division superintendent. From 1938-1958 he served as general superintendent for the Robert A. Welch interests, and then as president and director of the Mound Co. from 1948-1959. He also served as vice-president and director of the Fidelity Oil and Royalty Co. from 1949-1955. In 1953 he became trustee for the Robert A. Welch Foundation and today he is president and a member of the board of directors of that organization. In addition to his varied inter ests with the oil industry, he served as director of the First National Bank of Houston from 1953-1956, and director of the Texas National Bank of Houston from 1956-1957. Vitally interested in higher edu cation, Doherty was a member of the Board of Directors of the A&M College System from 1953-1959, the last four years as president of the board. He has also served with distinc tion as a counselor to the A&M Research Foundation. Now he is a trustee to the A&M Develop ment Foundation. In addition to his other con tributions to higher education, he co-authored with Joseph Zaba a book entitled “Practical Petroleum Engineer’s Handbook” which is now in its fourth edition. Doherty holds membership in many professional societies, among which are the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Texas Academy of Science, American Petroleum Institute, American DEDICATION (Continued from Page 1) in case of futuref changes and ex tensions. The area under the first floor may be converted into researcch work ing space in the future as the need devvelops. Served by 187 tons of air con ditioning utilizing a central com pressor, remote air handling units provide flexibility and utility as well as economy. Heating'is by hot water furnished by the college central heating plant. Teaching areas, offices and re search facilities of the Department of Petroleum Engineeinng and the Texas Petroleum Research Com mittee are housed in the main building. PPresently the Depart ment of Nuclear Engineering and the Activiation Analysis Research Laboratory are also housed in. the building. Modern and complete undergrad uate laboratories are provided, cov ering an approximate total of 10,- 000 square feet. These laborator ies include those designed for in struction in drilling and production, Association of Petroleum Geol ogists and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical En gineers. In 1951 Doherty was awarded a “Citation of Service” for dis tinguished service to the oil in dustry, the highest honor be stowed by the American Petroleum Institutp. fluid flow and natural gas, core and rock preparation and analysis, physical properties of fluids and subsurface engineering. A balance room for use by undergraduate and graduate students is also provided. Eleven 18 feet x 26 feet research laboratories are provided for low pressure nonvoliatile research, and six 20 feet x 26 feet research lab oratories in the high-pressure sin gle-floored wing to the main build ing are provided for high-pressure volatile reseach. An up-to-date re servoir-model research laboratory is also included. Each of these lab oratories will accommodate a min imum of two men, which will per mit at least 36 men to do labora tory type research. In addition to these research facilities, two com putation laboratories and other re search space furnish ample room for twelve or more men doing desk type research. Graduate students also utilize other space jointly with under graduate students, thereby permit ting a potential graduate enroll ment of 50 to 60 students. All laboratory space is equipped with modern, conventional-type chemistry laboratory furniture. Special stainless steel furniture is installed in limited areas where the corrosive fluids, are handled.
