A&M Cagers Piace
Three On AJ1-SWC
A&M pulled down some top
honors on the 1961 Associated
Press All-Southwest Conference
basketball team yesterday as three
men were voted to positions on the
first two teams.
Carroll Broussard was one of
three unanimous choices on the
first team while Don and Pat
Stanley grabbed positions on the
second unit.
Two more of the first team was
made up of Harold Hudgens and
Del Ray Mounts of Texas Tech
who also were unanimous choices.
From the top three men, there
were quite a few varied opinions
as to who could fill out the top
five. And the voting was so close
that the eight SWC coaches who
picked the team for AP gave Jan
Loudermilk of Southern Methodist
University a slim nod for fourth
position, but declared a tie for fifth
between three players. Clyde
Rhoden and Pat Foster of Arkan
sas and Donnie Lasiter all wound
up in a deadlock for fifth.
Although Texas Tech and Ar
kansas each had two players on
the first team, A&M was the only
school to place two men on the
second team.
Rice, Baylor and Texas Chris
tian failed to place a man on either
the first or second teams.
From the looks of things, the
SWC will be quite a bit stronger
next year since five of the players
on the first two teams were
juniors. These talented juniors in
clude Broussard, Mounts, Hudgens,
Loudermilk of the first team and
Arkansas' Jerry Carlton of the
second team.

Broussard Breaks 3 Marks
With Every Swish Of Net
Carroll Broussard, the greatest
varsity basketball performer in the
history of A&M will break three
school scoring records every time
he drops in a single point.
Broussard has a chance to break
two more records if he has a good
night against Arkansas tonight.
He only needs three field goals to
break TCU’s H. E. Kirchner most
field goals in one conference sea
son (116) record. This will be a
conference record.
If Broussard hits for 36 points
tonight, he will break Neil Swish
er’s season career record of 984.
Swisher compiled this total in
three seasons while Broussard has
played only two.
To become the second highest
scorer in SWC history, Broussard
has to score only three points.
Raymond Downs of Texas is pre
sently in second position as he
scored 322 points in 12 conference
games in 1956. Nick O’Neal of TCU
Vs the top man as he scored 362
pints in 12 conference games in
1955.
With only one game remaining,
Broussard has averaged 22.4 points
per game throughout the season
and 24.6 per game in conference
games.
So far this season the French
man from Port Arthur has broken
11 school records. They are:

points by Broussard in 1959-60.)

in 1959-60.)
(4) Most points scored in con

Swisher’s record was through
three years while Broussard has
played only two.)
(5) Most field goals in one
game: 15 against Arkansas. (Old
record of 13 by Bill Brophy vs.

Buckeyes Remain
In No. 1 Spot
By The Associated Press
Mighty Ohio State is the unani
mous choice as the No. 1 college
basketball team in the nation for
the 12th sti’aight week, and St.
Bonaventure is clinging to the run-
nerup spot by a slender thread.
The weekly Associated Press
poll Monday showed the unbeaten,
high-flying Buckeyes still unchal
lenged. They received all 36 of
the first place votes cast by the
special panel of sports writers and
broadcasters.
On the basis of 10 for a first
place vote, 9 for second, etc., St.
Bonaventure fell farther back of
the lead and just managed to beat
out Cincinnati for the No. 2 posi
tion.
The Bonnies dropped their sec
ond decision of the season Satur
day night to Niagara 87-77 after
scoring their 22nd victory earlier
in the week over Siena.
This caused- distribution of the
second place votes, which a week
ago went solidly to St. Bonaven
ture, and tightened the race for
the season’s runnerup honors.
