Pn.Tp G College Station, Texan Thursday, March 2, 19G1 THE BATTA^ ION A&M Cagers Piace Three On AJ1-SWC A&M pulled down some top honors on the 1961 Associated Press All-Southwest Conference basketball team yesterday as three men were voted to positions on the first two teams. Carroll Broussard was one of three unanimous choices on the first team while Don and Pat Stanley grabbed positions on the second unit. Two more of the first team was made up of Harold Hudgens and Del Ray Mounts of Texas Tech who also were unanimous choices. From the top three men, there were quite a few varied opinions as to who could fill out the top five. And the voting was so close that the eight SWC coaches who picked the team for AP gave Jan Loudermilk of Southern Methodist University a slim nod for fourth position, but declared a tie for fifth between three players. Clyde Rhoden and Pat Foster of Arkan sas and Donnie Lasiter all wound up in a deadlock for fifth. Although Texas Tech and Ar kansas each had two players on the first team, A&M was the only school to place two men on the second team. Rice, Baylor and Texas Chris tian failed to place a man on either the first or second teams. From the looks of things, the SWC will be quite a bit stronger next year since five of the players on the first two teams were juniors. These talented juniors in clude Broussard, Mounts, Hudgens, Loudermilk of the first team and Arkansas' Jerry Carlton of the second team. The weekly Associated Press poll Monday showed the unbeaten, high-flying Buckeyes still unchal lenged. They received all 36 of the first place votes cast by the special panel of sports writers and broadcasters. On the basis of 10 for a first place vote, 9 for second, etc., St. Bonaventure fell farther back of the lead and just managed to beat out Cincinnati for the No. 2 posi tion. The Bonnies dropped their sec ond decision of the season Satur day night to Niagara 87-77 after scoring their 22nd victory earlier in the week over Siena. This caused- distribution of the second place votes, which a week ago went solidly to St. Bonaven ture, and tightened the race for the season’s runnerup honors. ITS NEW!
