PAUL — Norm Van Brocklin, the colorful Dutchman who carried the Phila delphia Eagles to the National Football League championship, Wednesday was named head coach of the new Minnesota Vikings. Van Brocklin’s appointment un der a three-year contract ended a four-month quest by the Vikings for an established pro football figure to direct them in the in augural year in the NFL. He steps into the coaching ranks three days after his valedictory as a player. Appearing in the East-West NFL All-Star game Sunday, the 34-year-old quarter back hurled three touchdown passes. Salary terms were not revealed. Van Brocklin becomes one of the youngest head coaches in the NFL. Behind him is a 12-year career of profesional stardom that was climaxed in 1960 with the Eagles’ championship. “Among Norm’s greatest qual ities as a player,” Vikings Gen eral Manager Bert Rose said, “is his demonstrated ability of lead ership. As a new coach in a tough league the Vikings will require the maximum degree of leader ship and direction of a squad that will be youthful in its makeup.7 f! In announcing the club’s with drawal, franchise owner John Har ris said he was sure he could “find some other way to invest a quarter of a million dollars in something new without so many headaches.” The NBA just Tuesday night had announced that it would ex pand from 8 to 10 teams in the 1961-62 season with new clubs in Chicago and Pittsburgh. Harris had been awarded the Pittsburgh franchise. The ice show impresario said he had decided to go into basket ball only because he thought he had hired Bill Sharman as his coach. Sharman is a veteran back- court star of the league’s Boston Celtics. However, both Sharman and Celtic owner Walter Brown denied Harris’ announcement that Shar man would be the Pittsburgh coach. “I either jumped the gun or misunderstood Walter when I made the announcement.” Harris said. THE BATTALION Thursday, January 19, 1961 College -Station, Texas Page 5 FROM THE Sidelines By Joe Callicoatte “Poor Aggies! Poor Aggies! Poor Aggies!” That is the familiar sound heard after most all athletic contests between A&M and any team, no matter who wins. The Southwest Conference Sportsmanship Committee held a two day meeting in Dallas during the Cotton Bowl weekend where all schools were present to hash out their complaints of bad sportsmanship against each other. As the meeting ended, it looked as if some of the prob lems would be worked out and future relations would be more desirable. But, when A&M was in Lubbock taking their medicine from Texas Tech, even the radio relayed the howl of ‘Poor Aggies’ in the background. And incidentally, Texas Tech is supposed to be shining example of sportsmanship since they did take the trophy home with them from Dallas. Then in Austin last Monday night, the Texas fans were in traditional form with their “Poor Aggies” chant, along with a few more disgusting actions. But hold on just a minute, A&M students. What was the predominant sound as the Fish-Yearling game ended? It wasn’t anything like “Yea, Gig ’Em Fish,” but it was “Poor Teasips.” Don’t gripe, Ags, you asked for it. There is an alternate solution to the problem of being good sports. Certain periods in each basketball game could be set aside for cup throwing or during halftime at the foot ball game; there could be a free-for-all on the 50-yard line. From past indications, some schools in the SWC would be well satisfied. Or maybe a question should be asked! Are there any good sports in the Southwest Conference ? INTRAMURALS Two championships were won yesterday in intramural sports as B-2 came out on top in Class A horseshoes and Hart Hall won the finale in Class C horseshoes. B-2 won three straight games in the elimination series in getting to be kingpin. ' In the last game B-2 blanked G-2, 3-0. The men on the winning B-2 team were Rector, Floyd, Steel, Henderson, Eagle, and Riente. Hart Hall defeated Mitchell Hall in the championship game, 2-1. -GROCERIES- Del Monte—Pineapple - Grapefruit JUICE 2 - 46-Oz.
