Page 4 THE BATTALION 1 College Station, Texas Thursiclay, January 5, 1961 FROM THE Slclcii ineS By Joe Callicoatte Maybe proper condolences are in order for the four Southwest Conference football teams that saw action in post season bowl games. Or maybe there could be congratula tions for the SWC. Quite characteristic of any SWC team, each team play ed a heads-up ballgame, but failed to come out on the win ning end of the score. It seems that the same thing happened to A&M’s grid team during the regular season. Texas University came near to beating the Bear Bryant Boys from Alabama, but the game ended in a 3-3 deadlock as A&M did three times during 1960. Rice took off to New Orleans for a fracus with the top seeded Mississippi Rebels and were set back 14-6. The sta tistics favored the Owls, but they also favored A&M as Rice won in regular season play. Baylor’s Bears fought back for 12 points after trailing 13-0, but it still wasn’t enough. The comeback was great, but so was the Aggies’ against Texas. The Arkansas Razorbacks roared into Dallas sitting atop the SWC crown, but failed to produce when the time was right against the Duke Blue Devils. The Hogs had their chance as did the Aggies when they were playing Arkansas on Kyle Field. From the looks of the bowl game scores, it appears that the Conference might have been a little weak, but any SWC opponent can probably squelch that rumor. These teams had it tough getting to play in, a bowl game since they had to play the other seven members in the conference. Even the “near miss champion” Aggies were hot on all four of these bowl participants. EXPERT SERVICE WORK from coast-td-coast ' 1981 JANUARY 1961 WINTER SAFETY SERVICE 1. Both Carter Franklin and Ran dy Sims were starters in the game that pitted stars from the Southwest against the rest of the United States. A&M Cagers Win Conference Opener Against TCU Frogs The A&M Cagers finally warmed up in the second half Tuesday night to take their Southwest Con ference opener from the Texas Christian Horned Frogs by an 82- 69 margin and bring their season record to 6-3. Carroll Broussard continued to pace the Cadets with his 29 points followed closely by Pat Stanley who had 20. Broussard’s 29 count ers left his season average hanging just under the 20 mark as he has 19.8 Holiday Split During the holiday festivities the Aggies broke even in the won-lost column as they dropped both games of the Bluebonnet Tournament in Houston, but took victories at Lubbock. In Houston two Oklahoma teams dropped the Cadets. Oklahoma State downed A&M 60-58 in an overtime in the first game and Oklahoma U. outmanned the Ag- Job Changing Popular During Christmas Recess Job changing seemed to be quite popular around the A&M Athletic Department during the Christmas holidays as three members re signed their positions. Two of the resignations came from Aggie football coaches Willie Zapalac and Matt Lair who will be working under Texas Tech’s newly hired coach, J. T. King. The other man lost from the department was Jones Ramsey, sports publicity director. Ramsey is replacing Wilbur Evans as sports publicity director at the University of Texas. Evans re cently left Texas to work with the Southwest Conference sports pub licity. So far the two vacant coaching positions haven’t been filled, but Tommy Blake, who had been a sports writer in Brenham, has been named to Ramsey’s position. gies 69-56. The Aggies came back, however, in Lubbock and turned in one of their better games of the year, downing Eastern Kentucky, 76-57. In the second game they beat the Air Force Academy, 62-51. Aggressive on Defense In A&M’s last outing against TCU, the Cadets were particularly aggressive on defense even though the Froggies gained as much as an eight-point lead in the first half. TCU was very hot with their shooting in the opening minutes of play and couldn’t seem to miss until the Cadet defense began to tighten. Although brother Pat tossed in 20 points against TCU, Don Stan ley hold down the second place scoring position with a 10.6 aver age and is followed closely by Wayne Annett with 9.7. Pat is averaging 9.2 for fourth place. Pace Setter Broussard is setting the pace in all the statistics columns. He has 87 rebounds; a .409 shooting per centage; and has dropped in 60 of 71 free tosses. Jerry Windham is second in re bounding with 74 and Pat Stanley is third with 66. Aggie Frosh Win Over TCU Wogs The Aggie Fish won their second game of the young basketball sea son Jan. 3 as they defeated the TCU Wogs Tuesday, 58-50. Leading the Fish scoring was Bennie Lennox as he poured in 26 points. Guard Dave Johnson and forward Lynn Merritt each scored 13 points in the win. The Fish had to fight an uphill battle throughout most of the game against the Wogs. They trailed at halftime, 25-18, but with 5:44 left to play, Johnson dropped in a jump shot to put the Fish in the lead by 47-45, a lead which the Wogs were never able to overcome. As far as shot percentages go, the Fish were below the Wogs. The Fish scored on 23 field goals out of 71 attempts for a 32.4%. The Wogs mad 20 out of 53 for a 37.7%. The story behind the per centages is that it pays to at tempt those field goal shots. After two games, Bill Robinette leads the Fish field goal percent age with 12-18 for .667. Dave Johnson is right behind with 8-13 for .615. Bennie Lennox has 19-53 for .358 and 12-16 free throws for a .750 with a total point average of 25 points. Lynn Merritt has a two- game point average of 16 points and Robinette has averaged 15 points per game. The next game for the Fish is Jan. 7 against the Baylor Cubs in Waco.
