Page 2 College Station, Texas Thursday, September 15, 1960 THE BATTALION Sophomores Figure Big In ’60 Baseball Team Hopes A&M went from the top to the bottom in one year in Southwest Conference baseball competition and will lean heavily upon soph omores in 1961. Winner of the conference title in 1959, Coach Tom Chandler’s Aggies fell to the bottom last spring with a 5-17 mark, one of the lowest in recent years. The Aggies’ lone SWC victory last season was a 16-6 verdict over SMU. The 1-11 conference record left A&M in last place. Chandler sees brighter things ahead for his varsity, though, since his frosh team won 10 of 11 games and include a perfect- pitched game against the Baylor Cubs by Ed Singley, stylish right- Tennis Team Up Under New Coach Under the guidance of Omar Smith, first-year tennis coach at A&M, the Aggies drove to a fifth- place finish in the Southwest Con ference last spring and should be stronger next year. Two members were lost through graduation—Captain Bob Jones of Garland and Frank Blazek of Elizabeth, N. J. Returning will be Richard Hal ter of Baytown, Tommy Morris of Waco and David Knox of Green ville. Halter will be a senior this season while the other two will be juniors. Members of last year’s frosh team include Larry Cannon of Corpus Christi, Jerry Cox of Palo Alto, Calif., Bill Miller of Coro nado, Calif., and Mike Young of Beeville. hander from Oklahoma City. Singley, his twin brother Jack, a third baseman, Catcher Bill Puckett; Shortstop Terry Cobb and Outfielder Ray Hall were the stars of the 1960 Fish team that won all its games except splitting a pair with the Texas Yearlings. Chandler loses by graduation Captain J. B. Carroll, Catcher Don Chase, Outfielder Bill Houchin and Infielder Dink Patterson. Re turning lettermen include Byron Barber, John Burton, Don Costlow, Clifford Davis, Dick Hickerson, Johnny Hudson, Olen Jordan and Randy Wortham. 1959 A&M Freshman Results Fish 13, TCU Wogs 14 at College Station. In the three seasons Rogers has been at Aggieland the Cadet cag- rrs have risen from the cellar to become Southwest 'Conference ’ontenders. Although the Aggies ■f last season had a late slump, osing three of four games, the '9-5 record posted by Rogers’ 'barges was the best in decades. In addition to many upset wins hi loop competition the past three years, A&M won two pre-season tournaments in the conference Yacas at Houston, and retired the ast two trophies since the con- ’erence fathers voted to discon tinue the annual pre-season tour ley that began in 1951. Those /ins in 1958-59 and 1959-60 were the only two tournaments won by he Aggies. Gone from the 1959-60 team are 3-7 Wayne Lawrence, 6-3 Wilmer Box and 6-4 Kelly Chapman, but returning will be the exciting Stanley twins, Pat and Don, of Buna; Carroll Broussard of Port Arthur; Wayne Annett of Chicota plus 7-0 Lewis Qualls of Houston, 6-7 Jerry Windham of Hamilton and 6-0 Charlie Minor of Pampa up from the freshman team. Broussard will return for his junior season after a fabulous sophomore year in which he be came the school’s first 400-point producer and if he continues his fast pace will easily become A&M’s first 1,000-pointer for a career. Broussard, 6-5 ace who does every thing well, put his name in the A&M record book four times last ^eason and before he plays out his eligibility in two more seasons should own all or most of the Cadet records. Replacing the annual SWC pre season tournament are two double- headers at Houston and Lubbock. The Aggies will switch opponents in these two affairs with the Uni versity of Houston and Texas. Tech.
