Automobiles and good roads, along with the ex pansion of rural mail routes, have eliminated the need for thousands of cross-roads, country store post offices. Of the present Texas post of fices, 202 are rated as first class offices, 33 as second class, 589 third class and 567 as fourth class. The classification of the office and compensation of the postmas ter are determined by the volume of business. There arp 3,900 first class post offices in the whole country. There were 31,377 Rural Free Delivery (RFD) routes in the na tion as of June 1, extending a total of 1,752,601 miles. There were 1,584 of these routes in Texas, with 98,875 mileage. The most isolated postoffice in Texas is Terlingua, in Brewster County’s Big Bend country. It is 85 miles to the south of Alpine, close to the Rio Grande, and serves 32 families. Postal receipts run $350 a year. It is only 31 miles from the Big Bend National Park headquarters. And is served by one of the 388 Star routes which extend 28,049 miles in the state.
