THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas SPORTS Tuesday, April 12, 19G0 S PORT SLANT By JOE CALLICOATTE s The Aggie soccer team is going great guns in the Hous ton City Cup playoffs. Over the weekend the Ags took a 3-2 win from the Houston Cougars to move them a little closer to the cham pionship. The Ags went into the game as underdogs, since Hous ton had already topped them twice during the year and went on to win the state championship. The game with UH was quite a long drawn out affair since it lasted a total of two and a half hours. The first 90 minutes ended a regular game, but the score was deadlocked at 1-1. The first 30 minute overtime was played and the score was 2-2. After two hours of olaying time the Ags decided | to end the contest with their third score in the second over time. One member of the team said that it was definitely the roughest game of the year and was strickly a defensive one. He said that Houston was plenty mad and sent some of our players to the hospital, but .... he added, “they have some in the hospital too.” The Ags must win one more game to cinch the Houston Cup. ★ ★ ★ We have a couple of idols among us. Probably both of them are seen every day or at least once a week by the stu dents, but it makes no difference to some the young hero worshippers around College Station. From the press box at Kyle Field Saturday, a whole mass of little boys were crowded around getting somebody’s auto graph. Until they cleared away, you chouldn’t see who they were, but it was none other than Carroll Broussard and Wayne Lawrence. campus character: BLACKSTONE TORT Pride of the law school, Blackstone has never lost a moot trial. Owls Take 6-2, 7-2, Decisions from Aggies Jb^,1' a**-.. o. Hartman Hits Alvin Hartman, Owl first baseman, connects the weekend. In the first game Hartman for his only hit in the two game series went hitless in five trips to the plate, but played between the Aggies and Rice over got one hit in four trips in the second game. The Aggie baseball team took a double dose of Owl medicine over the weekend as they dropped a pair of conference tilts to Rice by scores of 6-2 and 7-2. The strongest thing in the Rice potion was the pitching of Paul Timme and Jim Brock, as they combined forces to give up 12 hits in the two-game series. The Owls used one big inning in both games to down the Cadets. In the first contest on Friday Rice turned in four runs in the second to provide the 6-2 decision. A six- run burst in the first inning brought defeat for the Ags in Sat urday’s contest. Out of the 13 runs scored on the Aggies in the two games, only seven of the runs were earned, which shows some improvement in the mound staff. Saturday’s game was one of the shortest on Kyle this season as it only took two hours and 17 minutes. After the Owls batted around in the first inning, several innings went three up and three down for both teams. In both meetings the Aggie scoring came in one inning. Friday afternoon the fifth inning was the big one and in Saturday’s game the two runs came in the fourth. The Aggies’ two runs in the second game resulted from a boom ing homer over the left field fence by Byron Barber and a single by Johnny Hudson who scored John Burton from third base. The loss to Rice still leaves the Cadets with only one conference win, scored against SMU in the opener. The Aggies will take a vacation from conference action this week as they travel to San Antonio for two games with the Brooke Medics and one contest with St. Mary’s University. ...v- —...j! // You Have a Car, A Home, A Family One man can solve all of your insurance problems. IIA.1NOI* Ag Trackmen Take Second, Top Record During Weekend The Aggie Thinclads took second place in one meet over the week end and broke a record in another. Friday the Aggies were in Dal las competing in a triangular meet with Rice and SMU and Saturday they went a little farther north to enter the 'North Texas Relays in Denton. In the Dallas meet the Ags were quite prosperous as they racked up 55% points to finish nine points behind Rice. Field events dominated the Ag scoring in Dallas as they won the shot put, discus, javelin and high jump. Henry Bonorden tossed the shot 54-14 to turn in one of his best performances of the year. Owen Hill heaved the discus 163-2 to take first place. Jim Brewer came through in fine style to win the Javelin with a 199-11 throw. Bobby Thomas and Charles Mer- ka tied for high jump honors with their 5-10 leap. The Aggie Fish literally ran away with freshman division hon ors as they piled up 86 points to beat their closest contender, SMU, with 51 points. The Young Cadets won 10 of 15 events and were the winner of all Bowling Championships Net Three Scores Over 700 Billy Bostwick, Citadel football trainer, estimates that 40,000 yards of adhesive tape was used on the 1958 squad. The team won 4 of 10 games. TOLEDO, Ohio UP)—Only three 700 series were rolled in the singles I event of the 58th American Rowl ing Congress championships dur ing the first five weeks. But in the last three days someone has bettered 700 each day. The man to do it Monday was Francis Chartrand, a 39-year-old St. Louis accountant. He opened with 233, added another 233 and closed with 247 for a 713 that was good for fourth place. Chartrand had a 528 score with his team and 631 in double's for the day’s best all-events total, 1,872. One month earlier Mike Totsky of Detroit became the first singles contestant to break 700. His 711 is now the fifth-place score. Paul Kulbaga of Cleveland posted the pace-setting mark of 726 on March 24; Howie Zunker of La Crosse, Wis., rolled 725 last Sunday; and Dominic Bertolini of Youngstown, Ohio, hit 720 on April 1. Sixth- ranked James Cappalino of James town, N. Y., got his 702 last Satur day. There were no changes Monday in doubles, all-events or booster and open team division top tens. the point making places in the high and broad jumps. The Frosh took first in the 440- yd. relay, mile run, high jump, broad Jump, 440-yd. dash, 100-yd. dash, 220-yd. dash, javelin, shot put and discus. Five meet records fell in the freshman division and the Fish were on the breaking end of two of them. The 440-yd. relay team composed of Ed Williams, George Tedford, John Kent and Curtis Roberts broke the old record by .3 of a second and Tedford bettered the old 440-yd. dash record by .4 of a second. Only a 10-man squad went to Denton, but Bonorden set a new relay record in the shot put with 53-3%, several inches shorter than he had thrown in Dallas.
