Freshmen Baseball Prospects Look Bright for 1960 Season Although having the same trouble - as the Varsity, the wea ther, Gary Herrington has been pvtt’r >• , ' \ '•? The Fish have a big contribution fj’dm the Sooners of Oklahoma this Aggie Gym Team Downs Longhorns The Aggie gymnastic team opened the season with a victory Saturday as they topped the Texas Longhorns 55-53. Charles Teas was the high man for the Cadets as he took first place in four events. He won the long horse, free calisthenics, high bar and the trampoline. Ramiro Galindo took one first place in parallel bars as well as racking up points in several other events. The gymnastic team’s next meet will be the Southern Invitational Tournament in Lafayette, La. year. The Singley Twins, Jack and Ed have showed up well at third base and pitcher. Also, an- othrr Oklahoma City boy, Bill Puckett, has been working well at catcher. Herrington said that Bobby Col lins of Liberty had been catching well, along with Puckett. Rounding out the rest of the top infielders is Terry Cobb .of Beaumont at shortstop, Jerry Car ter of Fort Worth at second and a close battle at first base between Reggie Richardson of Beaumont and Charles Watkins of Brown- wood. So far there are three mounds- men battling it out. Besides Ed Singley there is Mike Spence of Dallas and Jerry Warren of Gal veston. Five men have been named by Herrington as top outfield pros pects at the present. Herrington «aid that the team has been hitting fair so far but still needed a lot of improvement. He said that most of the boys are big and have the potential of mak ing good varsity players. “Everybody is filled with en thusiasm and plenty of spirit,” said Herrington. Because of the large number of players, Herrington has been cut ting a few each day and will prob ably continue until the squad is whittled down to working size. Herrington is acting as assistant coach for Shelby Metcalf who has just finished his basketball chores for the season. Herrington was an All-SWC catcher for the Ag gies, but has used the last of his eligibility. The Fish will play their frist game with Navarro Junior College on March 17.
