f Nationally Ranked Ags Rest; Resume League Action Feb. 6 The Aggie basketball team, na tionally ranked and recognized by their own conference as the first- est with the mostest for the next two uncontested weeks, can sit back and breath freely until Feb. 6 when Southwest Conference play begins again. All league teams will remain ominously silent hatching sweet thoughts of revenge while waiting for exams to end so they can jump back into action. The one exception to this is Texas Tech, who has yet to taste the brand of ball the Aggies play this season, but will find out in early February when they journey to College Sta tion to tangle with the Farmers in the first game of the new semes ter. The Red Raiders are tied for sixth in SWC battle, and hold a 1-2 conference mark. They are 4-9 for the season. Sophomore Carroll Broussai’d continues to lead the Ags in con ference and season scoring, with a total of 223 points over the year’s route. He is averaging 15.4 points per game in league war fare. Tall, 6-7, Wayne Lawrence is the top rebounder for the Cadets, and is second in scoring with a 12.2 point pre game average in SWC scoring. Lawrence has 101 re bounds, trailed by Broussards 93. Pat Stanley leads brother Don in season scoring, but Don has the edege in league play. Both brothers have identical conference rebound records ... 30 apiece. Don has 111 points in season play, and 57 in the conference. Pat has 121 in season play and 42 in the confer ence. As a team, the Farmers are av eraging 66 points, while they’re opponents are shooting at a 54.6 clip. The Ags are hittin the bucket at a .390 clip while limit ing their foes to a .373 shooting percentage. Broussard holds four oul^of five individual' marks for the Cadets this season. He’s scored 29 points on two occasions, both against the Longhorns, hit the most free throws in one game, with 14 against Houston. Skyscraping Lewis Qualls has taken over the scoring lead for Coach Shelby Metcalf’s freshman team, averaging 13 points per game. The 7-0 Qualls is also the top rebounder for the frosh, with a total of 79 to his credit. Jimmy Cobb, from the same home town of Buna as the Stanley twins, is second in scoring with a 10.6 average, followed by Jerry Windham with a 12.0 average and Charlie Minor with a 14-7 per game average. Windham has played in one less game than Qualls and Cobb, while Minor, due to a leg injury that may sideline him for the remainder of the sea son, has played in only four games. The Frosh, boasting a 6-2 record and only one loss to Southwest Conference freshman teams, * are averaging 66.1 points per game, while holding their opponents to 57.2 points per game. Qualls has been outstanding on a free throw line, sinking a total- of 18 of 22. Lee Walker has the edge there, though, making a total of 18 of 18 of his charity tosses count. , The Fish have only four games left on their schedule, and will play two at home and two away. Their next game is Feb. 18 when they meet the Rice Owlets in College Station. INTRAMURALS Intramurals were scheduled to start their second round yesterday, but Class A cross country was postponed until after finals. A tough defense and control of the backboards spelled out the Tiger victory although both teams seemed to have ice water in their veins. The Tigers hit 35 per cent of their shots from the floor As well as tossing in seven charity throws. The Brahmas were warmer at the free throw line and put nine of them through the hoop. They were not so fortunate in shooting from the floor as they only chalked up 25 per cent. Smith paced the .winners with his 14 points as well as being high man for the game. Bruce Thomp son, the Tigers leading scorer, was held to 11 tallies by an alert Brahma zone. Larry Wiestruck tossed in 13 markers for the Brahmas which put him only a hair behind Smith. Most of Wiestruck’s scoring came on fall-away jump shots. 6-5 Cal Swearingen found the range for only eight against the staunch Bengal defense. In the “B” contest smiled again on the little as they racked up their consecutive win. The win was sparked by John Pedigo as he drove in for a layup during an overtime period in the 31-29 victory Bengals seventh test. Coming from behind all the way, the Maroon and White held a 29- 25 lead in the last minute of regu lation play but Raymond Deutrich and Kent Smith each found the range to knot the count. The young Tigers used the freeze to control the ball and Ped igo’s layup sacked up the contest. Junior guard Danny Garner, hitting from outside Bellville’s zone defense, ripped the cords for 14 points while Bellville’s Deutrich had 15. The Tigers meet Navasota in the Rattler Gym Friday night after semester exams and tangle with the Cy-Fair Bobcats in Tiger Gym next Tuesday. A&M MENS SHOP 1 03 MAIN NORTH GATE AGGIE OWNED Coach Shelby Metcalf showed the manners of a true Southern gentleman last night when his Aggie Fish racked the Rice Owlets, 75-52. Late in the second half, with only 1:48 minutes left to play, the Owlets fouled out their fifth man. Since Rice suits out eight players, it only left four play ers to finish the game. This is when Coach Metcalf called a time out and when play was resumed, there were only four Fish on the floor to make the number even. Lewis Qualls took a meager edge in scoring for the Young Cadets as he tossed in 17 points, seven on field goals. tSMSNVHODH 25% Off On BOOKS Best Sellers.
