Red Hot Farmers Cool Owls, 61-43; Take Over Undisputed First in SWC Bob Bogers and his crew cut five, the hottest basketball combo in the jazzy Southwest Conference, cooled the Rice Owls last night in Houston, 61-43, to pull into undis puted first place in the Southwest Conference race. With Wayne Lawrence and Don For ACCREDITED BIBLE COURSES for Aggies During 2nd Semester See Your Official Class Schedules Under “RELIGIOUS EDUCATION” Stanley calling the tune, the Ca dets trailed the Owls only in the opening minutes of the game, and at one point in the second period boasted a 22 point lead. Lawrence, Stanley and brother Pat were the only Ags scoring in the double figures, with Lawrence hitting for 13, Pat for 10 and Don for 11. Butch Craig was high point man for Rice with 19 points, 16 of them in the first period. The Farmers moved away from a 34-26 halftime lead to a quick 17 point margin halfway through the second half before Rice could ever muster a field goal, and scored 14 points to four for the Owls before the Houstonians could begin a rally. Junior Elliott Craig was the sparkplug for the Cadets in the second period, coming on in relief and scoring eight points before the final buzzer, hitting for six in the final three minutes. The win gave the Ags undis puted first place in the league with a 4-1 SWC record, trailed by SMU and Arkansas with 3-1 marks. The Farmers are 12-1 for the season and ranked 10th in the nation according to Associated Press. Defense was the big answer the Aggies came up with in the final frame, limiting Rice to only 17' points, eight of them coming from the floor. The rest were free toss es, with Butch Craig scoring two in the final eight seconds. A&M’s outstanding sophomore, Carroll Broussard, had another one of his off nights after racking up 29 points against Texas last Fri day, being held to eight points by “1 OLD ARMY LOU HAS ON HAND .... PACE 4 THE BATTALION Wednesday, January 20, 1960 College Station, Texas CPORT SLANT , k_7 By BOB WEEKLEY I If you ever happen to take a trip down Port Arthur way with the intention of seeing A&M’s sophomore basket ball sensation, Carroll Broussard, you’d do well to carry his address along with you in your pocket. For the name of Broussard in that community is about as common as Smith is in New York, or the Irish name of Younkerwitz as Notre Dame. The Monicker is so common down there on the border of Louisiana, that Broussards occupy a full five columns in the phone book, and by just casually scanning the names, it seems they are all blessed with the same first initials. All this could be very good news for basketball Coach Bob Rogers, who might be persuaded to sign another Brous sard or two if they could present the same credentials as Carroll. As a matter of fact, Rogers might do well to investi gate William C. Broussard, a sophomore from Beaumont. With a name like that he’s bound to have some potential. ★ ★ ★ The Associated Press basketball pool made a liar out of me yesterday, and it was one time I didn’t mind having the tag placed on my name. Last week, after SMU had downed the Ags and knocked them from the undefeated ranks in America, I had predicted that the Farmers would be knocked down deep into the top 20 in the national standings, probably 18th or 19th. And lo and behold, the ratings came out yesterday and there were the Aggies, 10th in the nation, right behind Utah State. ★ ★ ★ The Aggies victory over Rice last night sent the Aggies into the undisputed lead for first place, since Baylor pulled the noose tight around Texas Monday night and sent them into a tie for fourth with Texas Tech and Rice. A&M now leads the pack with a 4-1 Southwest Confer ence record, and an 12-1 season mark. Southern Methodist and Arkansas, both idle this week, are tied for second with 3-1 marks. The Farmers will hold this lead until February, since all league teams are idle, until then. February 1 the Ags pack their suitcases and journey out to the West Coast where they will put their national rank ings on the line against San Francisco and Santa Clara, both of California. y 2 Price —All Plastic or Wood Hobby Kits Shaffer’s Book Store BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES One day 3<4 per y 2^ per word each additional day Minimum charge—10<■ DEADLINES 5 pjn. day before publication Classified Display 80^ per column inch each insertion PHONE VI 0-6415 WORK WANTED Would lik. mother in i come by B-] ■ to car< ny home. 7-A Colle: Call VI 6-7100 ge View. 57t2 Typing wanted, neat, accurate.
