Yuletide Calls For Caution On Highways Visions of sweethearts, friends, relatives and colorful activities are filling Aggies’ heads as the Christmas holidays near. But it is almost certain that some of us may never see them, unless traffic safety is practiced. It is an interesting but dread ful fact that from 1900 to 1958, more people in America were killed in traffic accidents than were kill ed in all the United States wars from 1775 to 1958. How many accidents have you witnessed ? How many have you been in ? Would you know the nec essary steps to perform if you were involved in an accident? Surprising as it may seem, many are ignor ant of the moral and legal respon sibilities they assume as motor vehicle operators. The first action you should un dertake is to protect the accident scene from further damage. This can be done by flagging approach ing vehicles from all directions. Turn headlight beams on wrecked vehicle if highway is obstructed at night. Keep other vehicles parked at least 100 feet from the accident. Give first aid to injured. Avoid rushing if possible. If injuries are serious, wait for a doctor before moving the person. Call an officer to the scene of the accident. In town call .city po lice and out of city limits call the highway patrol. Get names of operators, license number of every di’iver involved and names and addresses of all persons involved in the accident. Report the accident to the De partment of Public Safety on an accident form. You will be subject to arrest within two years if you fail to report an accident that caus ed a total damage of $25 or more. You are protected by law against anyone using the information you place on an accident form against you in court. Since it is a state law that every one carry liability insurance on his automobile, all responsible drivers will have it. Get the name of the insurance company and policy number of the other driver and give him yours. Report the accident to your insurance company, they have to investigate. ' Were you acquainted with these responsibilities? If you’re smart, you have fulfilled all of your ob ligations and all obligations to you should have been settled. If you’re not you’ll probably trouble. so enterprising, be in serious The Beginning of the End. Highway Danger, Yule Here Again Christmas season is here again and besides being a time of cele bration and giving, it is also the time of year when the asphalt jungle of the nation’s highways becomes a furious madhouse, screaming for careless victims. The country’s policemen strive to protect the unwary, but still they rush headlong into the un known until a rending of steel and tinkle of glass mingle with agon- ied cries to mark their end. Traffic rules were made to pro tect motorists. Are a few extra minutes with your loved ones worth the risk of never seeing them ? Here are some standard traffic rules. You probably ah’eady know them, but read them again, think about them and observe them. Give the undertaker a day off during The Passing Scene by O.
