The 7-foot eager scored 12 points against Tyler and collected nine rebounds. Coach Shelby Metcalf’s Texas Aggie freshman basketball team made an auspicious start here Tuesday night against the top- ranked Tyler Junior College Apaches. The Frosh won going away, 68-54. ' But that victory isn’t a season for the young Aggies, for they must face that same tough Tyler five on the Apaches’ home court, and those long shots for which Tyler is so famous should start meshing the basket. The Cadet freshmen take to the hardwood floor again next Tues day, when they host the Kilgore Junior College Rangers in a single game at White Coliseum. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The varsity tangles with Houston Monday. Top hands for the Fish against Tyler were the little playmaker, Charlie Minor, a 5-10 speedster from Pampa; 7-foot Lewis Qualls of Houston Smiley; 6-7 Jerry Windham of Hamilton; Jimmy Cobb of Buna; Billy Young of Ha worth, Okla., and Jimmy Keller of Terrell. The other two are the Stanley twins on the varsity starting five. Minor was high scorer with 19 points, but more important was his fiery hustle and ball handling. Observers of the game were call ing him the Farmers’ answer to Max Williams, voted to the second All-SWC team last year. Leading reboundef with 12 and next high scorer was Windham with 16 points. Qualls had 12 points and nine rebounds while Young had seven points and was tough under the back boards. The first half saw the lead change hands 10 times with the FisK holding a slim, 26-24 margin at the intermission. The play was so tight and contested that it al most erupted into a fight once. Tyler last led in the game, 37-36, eight minutes deep into the sec ond half, but two quick baskets by the towering Qualls put the Fish ahead to stay.' Windham and Min or then took charge with a flurry of goals to put the game on ice. The Fish have three more games before the Christmas holiday pe riod, all with Tyler and Kilgore. Cinemascope Jtanelriuitind FRIDAY 7:30 MSC Ballroom Southwest Conference Elevens All Share in Money from Bowls By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Waiter If you don’t think college foot ball is big business consider the Southwest Conference intake in the season just closed. In the first place there were 1,332,000 customers and that meant $4,656,000 taken in at the eight member schools. Then the three co-champions— Texas, Arkansas and Texas Chris tian—all got remunerative bowl bids. Each will pocket $86,000 and four other members of the conference—Texas A&M, Baylor, Rice and Southern Mehodist—re ceive $26,000 each without doing anything except watch the games on television. Texas Tech doesn’t share in the bowl money because it hasn’t yet started competing for the cham pionship. That will be next year. There’s still another financial item—television money. The con ference schools realize about $200,- 000 from that this season. Each school that had a game televised kept 20 per cent of the proceeds but the other 80 per cent was put into a community fund. All seven schools got a share of the 80 per cent. That meant $22,000 for each. Of course, coaching staffs are larger; much money is spent mak ing pictures of the games, so the coaches can study them, and there are many more expenses, not the least of which is paying for the Chemistry 101 (Chapts. 7-8-11-12), Math 101-102-103 and History 105 Freshmen Loupot now has outlines in these courses to aid you in reviewing for major quizzes and to aid you in learning enough to go to your professors and ask questions about your weaker areas. Corps freshmen may get these outlines from their scholastic officers and civilian freshmen can get their copies at Loupot’s. Remember, these outlines will not replace the help your professor can give you, but will help you in reviewing. Get your study outline from Lou and then go see your professor for more help. Don’t let the mid-semester grades get you down—get help from Lou, your professors and scholastic officers NOW and be around next semester. You still have plenty of time to bring your grades up by January. education of the 150 athletes that are on scholarship. There doesn’t seem to be any thing very commercial about col lege football although it takes in a lot of money from putting ama teur athletes on display. It all makes possible a fine spectacle for the people and gives hundreds of boys a college education. None of the schools end up with much profit. The money also is used to promote non-paying sports such as basketball, track, tennis, golf, cross-country, etc. Basketball has gotten-to where it pays its way but there’s no chance that the other sports ever will.
