THE BATTALION PAGE 2 Thursday, November 19, 1959 Worth Mentioning By Johnny Johnson “A truly fine institution with a wonderful spirit” were the words Robert F. Kennedy used to describe his impression of Texas A&M to me last night. The former chief counsel to the Senate Selecte of Im proper Activities in the Labor or Management Field was talk ing informally after a dinner in his honor by the Memorial Student Center Great Issues Committee last night. Kennedy Spoke here last night as the third speaking engagement of four planned talks at Texas colleges and uni versities. Earlier this week he spoke at Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas and will speak at Rice Institute later this week. Credit for the tour goes to"* J. Wayne Stark, director of the MSC, and to the Hon. Olin E. Teague, , 32. For the last couple of tours the Great Is sues Committee has been trying to get Kennedy to come here and speak. It was only through the efforts of Stark in getting the co operation of the three other schools and the work of Teague that this talk was accomplished. The Great Issues Committee headed by Mike McGuire deserves a large thanks for the arrange ments of Kennedy’s stop at Texas A&M. Wally Cannon is vice chair man of the group and Kenneth De- mel headed the selection committee. Robert Nichols and Joe Lindley are co-chairmen of the arrange ments committee. Reed Armstrong is in charge of publicity and Doyce Nance is program chairman. The presentation of Kennedy was only the first of three an nounced presentations by the com mittee for the 1959-60 school year. Brooks Hays, former Arkansas congressman, and Ernest K. Lind ley, Washington editor for News week magazine, are the other two speakers announced. The full house in Guion Hall served as a vote of confidence for the committee which is under study by the MSC Council as-to its cul tural value. Few people who were in Guion Hall last night could deny that the value of hearing a man like Ken nedy speak in person is an inval uable addition to the culture and education of a college student. The Battalion takes this oppor tunity to express appreciation to Stark, Teague,- -the Gvgat Issues Committee and all othefs'-connected with Kennedy’s appearance here. It was certainly a job well-done and another of the things that make Texas A&M a great institu tion. ★ ★ ★ The Houston Press chose to com mend the Aggies in its editorial columns last Friday. The editorial was very praising of Texas A&M and is worth re printing for the benefit of those Aggies who were unable to read it in The Press. “Some 4,000 members of the Texas A&M College cadet corps will spread over Houston this week end. * North Side, West Side, South End and East End—wherever you are, you’ll see trim, clean-faced, khaki-clad youngstei-s. Most of them will have pretty and excited young ladies on their arms. They wear the face of Texas. They come from the Panhandle to the Valley. . .from the Pineywoods to the Big Bend. Their pride in their heritage flashes like a ban ner unfurled. The Aggies have so much spirit, they export it. It’s never just a football game when the Cadet Corps is in the stands. Their sup port for their footballers is so strong and so sustained they wrap the whole stadium in their fire and enthusiasm. The fact that their beloved Ag gies are contesting Rice for the cellar, not the championship as has so often happened, doesn’t mean a thing. The “12th Man” will be there in full voice, primed to do their best to “gig ’em.” That’s also why 60,000 people will be in (See Worth on Page 3) HOLIDAY SPECIAL REGULAR $25.00 ALL WOOL SPORT COATS $16.99 National Advertised At $25.00 Sizes 36 to 44 THE SLAXATORIUM Main Street College Station THE BATTALION Opinions expressed in The Battalion are those of the stu dent writers only.
