RATLIFF Texas Associated Press Sports Editor The Southwest Conference can hold its head up with the nation in football. It actually boasts a su periority over all except one major conference and against that one— the Southeastern—it’s close. Surprisingly the league is ahead of the Big Ten Conference, which for years has boasted that it is the best in college football. Checking the records for the past 20 years, the Southwest has fared as follows against these four major conferences: Big Eight—won 46, lost 24, tied 4. Pacific Coast—won 21, lost 8, tied 1. Big Ten—won 10, lost 9. Southeastern—won 54, lost 55, tied 4. These figures do not include bowl competition. Against^ teams from these conferences, the Southwest has won 13 and lost 13 in the ma jor bowls. This research was prompted by a letter from Robert A. White of New Iberia, La., an old Southwest Conference follower. White said he had gotten sick and tired of hearing that the Southeastern Con ference was the toughest and best league in the country. This was brought about by Louisiana State’s INTRAMURALS Semi-final matches entered in the intramural results this week as some of the sports are begin ning to come to a close. Two semi-final games have been played in class A basketball.' Sq. 15 beat Co. L-2, 33-41 and Sq. 12 edged Co. B-2, 25-23. In class C basketball Walton took Bizzell, 30- 5. In class A handball Sq. 7 beat Co. C-l Sq. 1 and Bizzell won on forfeits and Co. A-l beat Sq. 5. Class A bowling showed Sq. 10 winning -over Sq. 3 and Bizzell took Leggett. Class B semi-final ping pong left Sq. 11 and Sq. 12 winning over Sq. 5 and Sq. 10. One semi-final match was played in class B horseshoes with Sq. 11 topping Co. C-2. In class B football Co. L-2 beat Co. G-2, 17-0 and Sq. 12 won over Co. G-l, 8-0. great two-year record and the fact that Mississippi is cleaning up on the outside competition, too. “Being an old Southwest Con ference fan and a Texan until a couple of months ago, I’ve always believed the Southwest Conference won a majority of their inter sec tional games,” he wrote. “Do you have any statistics on the South west Conference versus the South eastern Conference covering the past 20 or 30 years?” With some regret the informa tion was passed on that the South eastern actually was slightly ahead of the Southwest in the past two decades. But the margin is so slight it does not indicate that the Southeastern is superior. The margin over the Big Eight (Oklahoma’s conference) and the Pacific Coast are somewhat amaz ing and the fact that the South west is ahead of the Big Ten is surprising. It just goes to show that Texas high school football is the best in the world. Not only does it pro duce many outstanding college players for the Southwest Confer ence but it even beats itself—note that for two years in a row now it has whipped Oklahoma with its Texas-dominated teams.
