RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer Texas vs Mississippi in the Cot ton Bowl ? That could be it and would be quite an attraction. However, there are some serious obstacles to a meeting of the teams that clashed in the Sugar Bowl in 1958. Clash isn’t quite the word. Mississippi clashed but Texas was on the recoil most of the time — Mississippi won 39-7. Texas undoubtedly would Wel come a chance to get revenge for that terrific beating and.the Long horns would have the guns to do it with. However, Texas still must play three teams—Baylor, Texas Chris tian and Texas A&M—before it can win the Southwest Conference championship, a requisite to ap pearing in the Cotton Bowl. Mississippi Tough Mississippi, which showed it was as good as national champion Loui siana State although taking a 7-3 licking from the mighty Tigers, isn’t home free for the Cotton Bowl itself. The Rebels must yet play Tennessee. The latter also plays Louisiana State and if it won both of these games could be the hottest bowl prospect of them all. A good attraction in the Cotton Bowl might be Texas and Syra cuse. Syracuse looks as good as anybody in the country and un doubtedly would welcome a return to the Cotton Bowl where it met a disappointing 1-point defeat in 1957. But Syracuse still has to play Penn State and Penn State also is some shakes of a football team. Syracuse Good Enough Syracuse appears good enpugh to remove Penn State but if it didn’t then Penn State would be a bet for the Cotton Bowl where it also appeared once, playing Doak Walker-sparked Southern Methodist to a 13-13 tie. Air Force Academy is another prospect. Air Force played TCU a scoreless tie in the Cotton Bowl last Jan. 1 and has another good team. It had lost only one game thus far and tied well-regarded Army. It should finish the sche dule without mishap and would have an 8-1-1 record, which could be as good as any in the country. Louisiana State hardly would come to the Cotton Bowl despite any personal wishes in the matter. LSU is too close to the Sugar Bowl. Clemson, which has only one good team left on its schedule— Duke—might be a good choice. It has lost only to Georgia Tech. The latter looked like a good pros pect twq weeks ago but that was before it had a rough time beating weak Tulane and lost to Duke. Georgia Tech seems to have hit the skids in a hurry. But this is just to point out that INTRAMURALS With the season speedily reach ing the half way mark, intramural sports are still carrying on at a rapid pace. In the only class A basketball contest recorded, Sq. 12 beat Co. B-l, 21-11. Co. B-2 beat Co. 1-2 in class A handball. In class B horseshoes, Sq. 9 took Co. H-2 and Co. C-l won over Co. A-2. Eagles Deserving Speaking of bowls what about North Texas State ? Here is a team that deserves a major bowl spot but unless somebody gets busy advertising the Eagles as a national power it will miss a bowl game of any sort. North Texas State appears to be in the peculiar situation of be ing too good and big for a minor bowl and not well enough known for a major. But North Texas State has a team that would go in any bowl and do a top job. North Texas appears certain to finish the season undefeated and untied and have a 12-game win ning streak. The Blue Bonnet Bowl at Houston might do well to, get North Texas State. The Cotton Bowl won’t invite North Texas because of its policy of matching intersectional opponents but the Blue Bonnet Bowl doesn’t have a host team since it has no tie-up with a conference and it can choose some team in the area to be the host outfit.
