Spartans Take Aim at Aggies; Three Team Attack Scheduled East Lansing, Mich.—^Michigan State’s varsity football team has embarked on the third and last phase of pre-season drills—polish ing offenses and priming defenses for game action which begins with Texas A&M Saturday. The first week of practice laid heavy emphasis on physical con ditioning. The second week was the “trial by fire” for Coach Duffy Daugh erty’s men, six days of heavy scrimmages climaxed by a full- scale stadium rumpus last Satur day afternoon. Then the team abruptly switched last Monday to one-a-day drills de signed to bring the team up to a sharp playing edge by the time of the Texas Aggie invasion. This freshening campaign will be punctuated by a final full game conditions scrimmage Saturday in Spartan Stadium. Several position shifts followed study: of movies of Saturday’s scrimmage, although not as start ling a group as a week previous when such top hands as Herb Ad- derley, Gary Ballman, Paul Riches- ter and Ed McLucas were shuffled about. Willie Boykin, 6-4, 220-pound end from Columbia, S.C., was moved from left to right tackle be hind Palmer Pyle. Boykin turned in one of the defensive gems of the fall drills when he caught half back Bob Ricucci from behind in an open field during Saturday’s stadium scrimmage. Soph lineman Dave Manders, of Kingsford, was switched from tackle to center, and soph center Dan Eakin, of Dewey Beach, Del., went to guard. In practice, the No. 1 offense group spends about 75 per cent of its time on offense and the remain der on defense, while the No. 1 defensive unit works some 60 per cent on defense and 40 per cent on offense. Behind them a third team works about 50 per cent of the time each way, so as to be able to spell either offensive or defensive men as the occasion demands. This will be es pecially true on road trips, when the squad is limited to 38 men. “I understand some coaches think this platooning idea won’t work, but we here at State think it will,” says Coach Daugherty. “We will go with complete units whenever possible in substituting, but there will be many individual substitutions also. Remember, any time the clock is stopped one sub stitute can be put in without the entry counting against his number of permissible times in the game. That, along with the two account able times each man may be sent in a quarter, adds up to a lot of substituting possibilities.” This lone substitution many times will be a quarterback shut- ling in or out. Daugherty has said he plans complete platooning at this vital position, designating Dean Look, Tom Wilson and Larry Bielat as offensive quai’terbacks exclusively, and Wayne Fontes and Ike Grimsley as their defensive replacements. Increasingly apparent is the fact that State will go this fall with first string offensive and defensive units both of which lay great stress on medium weight, mobile lines and backfields. Few are the really big men in the lineup this fall. Two of the nation’s top jockeys come from Pennsylvania. They are Bill Hartack, borne in Colver, Pa., and Bill Harmantz of Wilkes- Barre.
