TKe Battalion College Station (Brazos CountyJ, Texas Dr. Robert Cochran ineer To Direct New Department Dr. Kofyprt G. Cochran, a nuclear engineer of national prominence, became head of the new Depart ment of Nuclear Engineering Monday, Sept. 7, Dean of Engi neering Fred J. Benson announced. The new department was au thorized by the Texas Commission on Higher Education for the train ing of nuclear engineers at the graduate level. Cochran’s role at College Sta tion will be a dual one in that he will also head the Nuclear Science Center of the Texas Engineering Expermient Station. For the past five years he has been associated with Pennsylvania State University where he has been professor of nuclear engi neering and director of the univer sity’s research reactor facility. Cochran is a technical consult ant to the Division of Licensing and Regulations, U. S. Atomic En ergy Commission, the Research Division of Curtiss-Wright Cor poration, and to Nechiman Com pany, Ltd., Tokyo, Japan. He recently placed a five mega watt reactor in operation for In dustrial Research Laboratories, Inc., Plainsboro, N. J. A native of Indianapolis, Ind., Cochran was a nuclear physicist at the Oak Ridge National Labor atory for four years prior to join ing the staff of Pennsylvania State University in 1954. At Oak Ridge, he was in charge of the swimming pool reactor fa cility and conducted research in neutron detection devices, neutron and gamma ray spectroscopy, nu clear reactions induced by neu trons, reactor shielding and reac tor design. He has written extensively on nuclear reactor research results and on other phases of the nuclear engineering field. Cochran received his A.B. and M.S. degrees in physics from In diana University and his Ph.D. degree in physics from Pennsyl vania State University. He was a research assistant at Indiana University for three years. The new A&M staff member has membership in a number of professional organizations, includ ing the American Physical Society and the American Nuclear Society. He is a member of the National Research Council’s sub-committee on research reactors. Cochran and his wife are the parents of one son. Wainerdi, head of the Nuclear Science Center of the Texas Engineering Experiment Station, has accepted a change in assignment to become assistant to the dean of engineering. Dean of Engineering Fred J. Benson said that Dr. Wainerdi will be engaged principally as a coun selor for students in the School of Engineering but will continue his research studies in the field of nuclear engineering. Wainerdi came to College Sta tion in 1957 as associate professor of nuclear engineering, and head of the Nuclear Science Center. A native of New York City, he graduated from the University of Oklahoma with distiniction in 1952, receiving a B.S. degree in petrol eum engineering. He received his M.S. degree in nuclear engineering from Pennsylvania State Univer sity in 1958. In 1954, he was one of a few students chosen from throughout the United States to attend the radioisotopes handling course at the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear studies. The following year he was selected to attend the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. His attendance was sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission. Since coming to A&M from a position as coordinator of nuclear activities for Dresser Industries, Inc., Dallas, Wainerdi has served as supervisor of the college’s AGN- 201 nuclear training reactor facility and has been chairman of the Radiological Safety Committee for the A&M System. He is a member of numerous Becomes to Dean honorary and professional socie ties including Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Sigman Tau, Pi Epsilon Tau, Phi Eta Sigma, American Nuclear Society, Society of Nuclear Medi cine, American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engi neering and the Southwestern So ciety of Nuclear Medicine. He is a registered professional engineer.
