ZARAPE’S NOW OPEN MONDAY - SATURDAY 4:30 P. M. TIL 10:00 P. M. CLOSED SUNDAYS One of the South’s leading ex perts on poultry nutrition, Dr. J. R. Couch, professor of biochemis try, nutrition and poultry science, A&M has been invited to lecture before feed manufacturers, nutri tion experts and other scientists in seven European nations and Israel this month. Couch will leave New York on Saturday, for a tour of Scotland, England, Holland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Israel, where he is scheduled to make ad dresses on late developments in poultry nutrition and where he will confer with representatives of European poultry ration manufac turers. A pioneer in development of poultry rations using antibiotics and unidentified growth factors, Couch is credited by feed manu facturers as being one of the world’s finest poultry nutrition specialists. Ten years ago Couch success fully introduced such unidentified growth factors as distillers solub les, fish meals and dried whey into poultry rations, and added antibiotics—with the result that chickens fed on these diets made tremendous gains in growth with negligible mortality. The work of Couch and his col leagues in poultry nutrition is credited with making it possible for broiler producers to raise 3- pound birds in about eight weeks time, on 6 and a half pounds of feed. Ten years ago, it took from 12 to 14 weeks to make the same market weight and 12 pounds of feed. European broiler producers are making rapid progress in develop ing big markets, Couch says, but he adds they’re generally behind the United Slates. The broiler industry, as a major agricultural industry became reality about 1935, Couch says, bi^t the real progress in fast, economi cal production of high-quality birds has come about largely since 1948, he says. England will be the first stop on his tour. There he will present lectures in the London area, at the University of Redding, at Sutton In Scotland he will confer with the research staff at the Rowlett Research Institute of the Univer sity of Aberdeen. Dr. Couch will make a brief stop over in Holland to give a lecture at the University of Utrecht. He will also give lectures at Cux- haven in Germany and Pontane- vaux in France. In Switzerland he will confer with representatives of Ciba Pharmaceutical, Inc. and Hoffman- LaRoche Chemical and Pharmaceu tical Company. The Texas Agri cultural Experiment Station has a grant from the Hoffman-LaRoche firm for a study of tranquilizers in poultry feeds. Lead Meeting Of Secretaries A&M’s Dr. Davis To Attend Meeting lAs Dr. J. R. Couch Dr. W. B. Davis, head of the A&M Department of Wildlife Management, will participate in the annual meeting of the Amer ican Society of Mammalogists in Washington, D. C. June 21-25. Davis was president of the so ciety from 1955 to 1958. He has also served as vice-president and secretary of the society and ed itor of the Journal of Mammalogy. He is currently a member of the society’s board of directors. An outstanding feature of the program will be a symposium on the Mexican free-tailed bat. This bat is involved in the transmission of rabies to man. Mammalogists, including Dr. Davis, are interested in how these bats become infected with the rabies virus and how dangerous they are to man. The Bryan-College Station Chap ter of the National Secretaries Assn, held its monthly dinner meeting at the Triangle Restaur ant with the new officers pre siding.
