Babcock competition at the Student Publi cations Banquet Friday. Keith was presented a certifi cate and a check for $250 for his essay on “Texas A&M—What It Means to Me.” The award was presented by Babcock, a Beaumont businessman. Nine other students received cer tificates of merit for their essays on the same subject. They are James A. Brady, Kenneth Cox, Don Elledge, Olan Hunter, James E. Eedbetter, Thomas N. Payne, Troy David Spencer, Mickey E. Walker and Stanley Wied. In other activities, the outgoing editors of each of the student pub lications recognized their staffs and were presented gold watches by L. A. Duewall, director of Stu dent Publications. Watches were presented to Tommie A. Hennard, The Southwestern Veterinarian; Louis C. Stipp, The Engineer; Rod erick D. Stepp, The Aggieland; Delmar Deterling, The Agricultur ist; Joe Buser, The Battalion; and Robert T. Kerr, The Commentator. The Battalion’s summer editor, Johnny Johnson, was also pre sented a watch. Each editor then presented the 1959 editor of their respective pub lication. The Smorgasbord dinner began at 6:45 p.m., and was followed by voting by the audience on the Van ity Fair candidates. Buser, acting as master of cere monies, presented the annual Bat talion awards to outstanding peo ple on the campus. The awards were presented to Don Cloud, ca det colonel of the Corps; Robert L. Melcher, civilian student coun selor and foreign student adviser; W. L. Penberthy, director of Stu- anquet dent Activities; W. D. (Pete) Har desty, student organizations ad viser. I f L. A.. Duewall, director of Stu dent Publications; Ted Cathey, clerk in the Office of Student Pub lications; Jones Ramsey, sports publicity director; Tom Chandler, baseball coach; Dr. C. R. Lyons, director of Student Health Serv ices; and James L. Nuche, printer’s assistant at the A&M Press.
