HAVE A COKE] Bottled under authority of The Coca-Cola Company by BRYAN COCA COLA BOTTLING COMPANY Gale Oliver, co-captain on the Aggie football team, stepped out of his element Tuesday to heave the shot 54 feet in the intramural track and field meet. A toss of 53% won the Southwestern Conference meet Saturday, but there was one big difference. Oliver threw the 12 pound ball while the conference records are set with 16 pounders. Wayne Schaper, the big hurler from Galveston, holds the Aggies’ pennant hopes in the Southwest Conference baseball race in his big right hand. That’s the hand that grips the baseball today for the Farmers on Kyle Field against Rice, and it’s proven very capable. Schaper threw the best game of his career for the Aggies Friday when he chalked up a victory over the Texas Longhorns to move the Cadets into contention for the con ference title. In that contest the 6-6, 208- pound senior threw only 107 pitches and allowed four hits while giving up no walks. His record for this season is 3-0. The Aggies now hold a half game lead in the conference race, boasting a 9-4 record. J. V. Sikes was the first coach to turn the trick back in 1937, and was followed by J. L. Dimmitt in 1942, Homer Norton in 1943 and Beau Bell in 1951. The Aggies have won only seven pennants since they began participating in baseball in 1894. Officials SWC base ball play began in 1915. ★ ★ ★ If, by some quirk of fate, basketball coach Bob Rogers manages to sign the lofty Lewis Qualls, a 7-1 center from Smiley, he will undoubtedly have finished one of the best recruiting jobs in the history of SWC basketball. Here are a few of Roger’s recruiting achievements since taking over the basketball program two years ago after leaving East Texas State. He signed Wilmer Cox, Kilgore JC star; Kelly Chap man, junior college All-American; Carroll Brousard, sought by 30 other colleges and recently the fabulous Stanly twins, Pat and Don, from Buna and Kilgore JC. In the past month he has announced the signing of Charley Minor, an all-stater on the state AAAA champion Pampa team. ★ ★ ★ Texas has won the SWC baseball championship 36 times out of the 44 it has been played. The Aggies are second with seven followed by TCU with two. Three of the Steer’s vic tories weren’t complete, though. They were co-champion ships with A&M twice and SMU once. ACROSS 1.
