‘Do It Sharp’ Is Motto
Of Fish Drill Team
By SAM SPENCE
Battalion Staff Writer
Whether it’s right or wrong,
whenever you do something, do
it sharp! is the slogan of A&M’s
Freshman Drill Team which won
first place in marching competition
in the George Washington Cele
bration Parade at Larddo Satur
day.
The team, organized in 1947, is
composed of freshmen from both
Army and Air Force, ROTC units.
All members drill after 5 p.m. on
a strictly voluntary basis.
These freshman not only have
to be on their toes on the drill
field, they also have to be sharp
in their studies by keeping at least
a 1.5 grade point ratio. Any mem
ber who posts below one point at
mid-semester is dismissed from

New Look in DeWare
It was the same old game—basketball—in The Saddle and Sirloin Club sponsored the
DeWare Field House last night but with a event and provided the players to mount
new twist to the old story or tale—donkeys, the rubber-shoed animals.

the team.
Last year during the fall se
mester the drill team marched at
the three home football games
and the Dallas Corps trip. During
the spring semester, the mo-st ac
tive season for competition march
ing, the team had a new exper
ience when it traveled by plane to
Houston to participate in the Arm
ed Forces Day Parade. This was
the first time in its 12 years of
existence that the drill team had
made a plane trip.
This spring semester also holds
a busy schedule for the team. On
March 14, it will perform in Area
H competition at Texas Christian
University. This will bfi an Air
Force-sponsored contest between
only Southwest Conference drill
teams.
The drill team also has an invi
tation to march in the Fiesta
Flambeau at San Antonio, plus a
standing invitation to perform in
the annual Splash Day celebration
at Galveston.
Cadet Maj. Hoy Richards, an in
dustrial engineering major and
ex-Marine, is completing his 1 sec
ond year as instructor for the drill
team. Richards, who volunteers
his time for the team, is hoping
for a drill team to develop in the
future which will be a separate unit
from the freshman team and the
Ross Volunteers, which is restric
ted to juniors and seniors. Rich
ards said this team could be open
to all upper classmen. It could
be a good representative of the
whole college in competition drill
meets, Richards added.
Faculty coordinator for the
Freshman Drill Team, is Air Force
Cant. Grange S. Coffin Jr., who
also volunteers his time to organ
ize trips and transportation for
the team.
The team’s commander is Ben
B. Rice, a freshman, ex-Marine in
“A” Ordnance. Executive officer
for the team is Gregory A. Gar
cia of Squadron 6. David G. Lee,
a freshman who posted a 2 93 last
semester, is the team’s first ser
geant.
