This was the prediction of Percy Big-bee, g-eneral manag-er of the National Fire Protection Assn., in an address before a recent safety council meeting. He said 2,600 of these fires will occur in buildings and 1,300 will be in ordinary one and two-family homes. Fire is an aceident-r-an unex pected occurence usually involving loss and often accompanied by personal injury and death. Smoking and matches are the major causes of fires in the nation. Following close behind are heating- equipment, electrical equipment and appliances, rubbish, flam mable liquids, chimneys and flues, children with matches and light ning. Every home or business owners should check and make sure their heating systems are in perfect working condition, that electri cal wiring is safe and not over loaded and that rubbish is either removed, or placed in suitable con tainers. Across U. S. Seven Perish Each Time) Auto Travels Five Miles By BILL HICKLIN Battalion Staff Writer Every time American vehicles traverse 100,000,000 miles on the vast network of roadways thread ing our continent, seven persons are killed in traffic mishaps. That does riot feeCrti tod Astound ing—until the realization is brought to mind that there are well over 66,000,000 vehicles reg istered in the United States—it takes less than five miles per auto Vets Should Get Checks Friday Veteran’s checks will be mail ed from Waco Thursday so as to arrive here by Friday, Rob ert O. Murray, veteran’s advis or, announced today. He said the move was design ed to give the veterans a chance to get their checks be fore the Christmas holidays. to cover this distance. In the holiday season, due to the natural increase of cars on American highways, it is safe to assume that this distance is con siderably less. Here in Aggieland, visions of friends, relatives, colorful lights and gay parties are filling the Aggies’ minds. But it is a known fact that some may never see home again. This can be said not only for Ags, but for the entire American public, as nearly all traffic deaths can be allotted to our carelessness. Speed, gambles for right-of-way, lackadaisical pedestrians, passing without proper clearance, failure to observe warning signs — all are unnecessary evils which make our highways more brutal'than all the wars in the United States’ his- tory. Out of every 100 fatal accidents, 56 drivers are guilty of speeding, 23 more gambled for right-of-way, 15 had an overdose of alcohol and 17 tried to pass without proper clearance. Statistics seldom are impressive. But these show that every accident was caused by the driver. None can really be called accidents—they were destined to happen because of American indifference. Last year almost 1% million citi zens were injured in auto colli sions, at the cost of $5,300,000,000 damage inflicted. And 38,500 American were killed on our roadways. The Aggies con tributed two to this figure. How many will it be this year? Teenager Dies Every Two Minutes In Automobile Crashes Across U.S. By ROBBIE GODWIN Battalion Staff Writer Statistics show that once every two minutes, day in and day out, an automobile accident kills or maims a teenage victim some where in the United States. A study by two University of Nebraska professors, in which they clocked cars by radar, found that drivers in the 16-25 age group have the least regard for speed laws. Drivers 25 yeai-s of age and un der held only 17.5 per cent of the licenses among the drivers checked, but they were responsible for 36 per cent of the speed law violations. A report from Minnesota shows that the 15-24 age group comprises 17.6 per cent of the drivers in New Zealand is 1,200 miles east of Australia. It is composed of two large and several smaller islands. that state, but they accounted for 23.7 per cent of all accidents. Adding all this up, a car in the hands of a teenager is roughly twice as dangerous as a car driven by a mature adult. The Inter industry Highway Safety Com mittee reports that the 16-20 age group is involved in five times as many accidents as the 45-50 group, though both groups hold a pro portionately small percentage of driving licenses. »«•'>w m i.*«’( u i,* yi Ays V R fA THURSDAY & FRIDAY Joel McCrea in “FORT MASSACRE” Plus Tyrone Power in “THE SUN ALSO RISES” ope ijour Christmas _ is a happu one %/* North Gate Cleaners TREMBLES BEFORE THE NEW THE mu FUHKBRnur starring * PETER EUNICE FRANCIS MICHAEL CUSHING • GAYSON • MATTHEWS • GWYNM .
