Sue Lunsford, Mary Varvel and Anne Wil- The City Beat By Johnny Johnson College Station City Council members wrangled almost three hours yesterday afternoon trying to form the final policy concern ing street improvement for the city. What the complete policy is, won’t be known until tomorrow, but basically the plan will follow the recommendations made to the council by a committee made up of Councilmen J. A. Orr and J. H. Sorrels, City Attorney C. E. Dil lon and S. R. Wright. The plan was presented to the council for its action Monday night, but because of the absence of one member, final drafting was delayed until yesterday. Mayor Ernest Langford defended the council and its work Monday night when asked why more wasn’t being done. ‘'We had surveys made by two firms of consulting engineers as well as our own surveys made and found that to get all of the streets, 35 miles of them, in College Sta tion, it would take more than $1,500,000. To do appreciable work on them, it would cost more than three-quarters of a million dollars.” “We checked with our bond brok ers and they told us there was no way such a bond issue on the city could be sold. After much deliber ation we decided on the present pay-as r we-go plan. “This year we’ve allocated more than $70,000 for street work. Of this amount, $45,000 is earmarked for the city’s share of paving which with the $90,000 from residents on each side of the street will give $135,000 for paving for this fis cal year.” Physics Shop Gets Milling Machine A new bench milling machine, used basically for small accurate work, was purchased for the Phfsics Department machine shop last week. According to D. H. Kimberling, shop foreman, the machine will greatly increase the capabilities of the shop. He said the equipment makes it possible to do w T ork which larger machines cannot do.
