As ‘Fish’ Football Coach By BOB EDGE Battalion Staff Writer Possibly one of the most inter esting and versatile men on the A&M campus today is Capt. Joseph D. Bennett, who is current ly holding, down the dual respon sibilities of assistant professor in the Department of Air Science and assistant freshman football coach. In his coaching job, Capt. Ben nett has special charge of fresh man footballers in the Corps who are not presently on athletic schol arships. These boys have been recommended by their high school coaches and are currently trying out for scholarships while living with their respective ROTC organ izations. According to the Air Force coach there are several boys out of the 13 now trying out “who should turn out to be fine football players for A&M.” He remarked that the whole group was showing a lot of spirit and the coaching staff was well pleased with them. In addition to coaching freshmen, the captain counsels them in mat ters concerning football or air science. Capt. Bennett is an Aggie-ex himself, graduating with the class of 1950. While at A&M as a physi cal education major, he disting uished himself as a center on the 1946-47 Aggie football team, was school middleweight boxing champ ion in 1947-48 and an intramural golf champion. In addition, he taught boxing and helped develop the school golf course. Prior to attending A&M, he at tended the University of Colorado where he was a quarterback on their 1943-44 football team. He has continued his athletic pursuits while in the Air Force, capturing the runner-up position in the Air Force golf tournament while stationed in North Afrjca. In addition he was consolation champion in a recent tournament in Bryan. Before his present assignment, Capt. Bennett was stationed at Homestead, Fla., where he was a member of the Strategic Air Com mand. During the latter part of his seven-year career in SAC, he was adjutant headquarters squadron commander and commandant of the NCO Prep School The coach in blue is 33 years old and W’as born in Joplin, Mo. His family moved to Texas shortly after he was born and he later distinguished himself as an All- District center on the Abilene High School football team. He met his wife, Mary, while stationed in Salinas, Kan. They have two children, Jodie, three, and four-year-old Steve, who, ac cording to his dad, is a future Aggie. Sabbath services, open house and dedication will be held this week end beginning Friday at 8 p.m. for the ceremonies of dedication at the new Ike and Fannie Sablosky Building. The building is for the Jewish youth organization, the B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation. The sabbath services will be held Friday night at 8, the open house Saturday at 5 p.m. and the formal dedication at 2 Sunday afternoon. Principle speaker for the dedi cation ceremonies will be the na tional director of the B’nai BTith Hillel Foundation, Dr. Judah Sha piro. Rabbi Robert I. Kahn of the Temple Emanu El in Houston will be in charge of the Friday service. At the Sunday dedication cere monies welcoming speakers will include President M. T. Harring ton; Vice President Earl Rudder; Rev. James B. Aruge; representing the College Station Ministerial Al liance; Glen Estes, chairman of the A&M Interfaith Council; and Julis Schepps, president of the A&M Hillel Building Corp. Welcome will be given by Mrs. Shirley Reiser, director of the local Hillel Foundation and Jack J. For man will make the presentation of the building.
