For the fint time in several
vear*. women were housed in an
Aggie dormitory over the week
end and the plan met with general
approval from all sources concern
ed.
Dormitory 2 wa« opened for
guests in an effort to provide in
expensive and convenient accom
modations for Aggie* and their
gue*t* over the weekend. Price
for reservation* in the dormitory
was $1. All the rooms in the dorm
itory were filled with the excep
tion of three, used for the matrftn
and maid*.
The $1 fee was used to pay for
expenses in hiring a matron, dorm
itory guard and maid* needed over
the weekend. Approximately IlftO
was used for these services, leav
ing some J.10 which will be placed
in s special housing fund. The
funds will be used in the event
dormitories are opened on some
other occasion.
To improve relations between
A4M and Texas Women’s Univer
sity, 17 Tessie freshmen were in
vited down to be the guests of 17
Aggie freshmen who were selected
from each group, battalion, the Ag
gie Band. A Medical and A Veteri
nary at a Corps pass by Tuesday
night.
Harry Boyer, chief of housing
was pleased with the results of the
plan snd said the housing office
would be willing to try the plan
again He termed the weekend
the best success he has seen in 20
vear* of the siaiilar plan* He
commented, “I was most pleased
with the results of the weekend
and overwhelmed at the outcome "
Men living in the dormitory
were in favor of the plan and
agreed it was a success, but some
didn't think the dormitories should
he opened each weekend
Don Cloud. Corps commander
commented, “I thought the plan
was good because it saved the Ag
gies a lot of money, it promoted
better relations between A&M snd
TUT by bringing 17 Tessies down
and it was convenient for the men
without cars to house their date*
in the dormitory ”
Julian F. Beckman, Commander
of the Fourth Bn.. 2nd Regt , said,
“I think it was great for Aggies
because ft made it easier in the
line of expenses."
Jerry Gleason, Commander of
A Vet. Company said, "I think it
was good for one time, however,
it was too hard on our freshmen
and sophomores because there was
too much strain on them moving
around.”

L D. Haskew told delegates to the
15th annual Junior College Con
ference which opened yesterday
and closes today.
Haskew, dean of the College of
Education and vice president of
Development Services at the Uni
versity of Texas, addressed confer
ence members from 2 colleges snd
universities at the opening session
Monday
Speaking on the subject, “Cur
rent Issues in Higher Education,"
He said that Texas needs JIM mil
lion more annually for it* stale-
supported institutions of higher
learning. $1 million more for it*
junior colleges and fL’4 million
more for other colleges and uni
versities of the state.
Haskew said the people of Texas
have put off and compromised the
question of introducing higher
quality in our educations system
"We in Texas must understand
and face up to the challenge we
face in higher education," he said
The speaker said that Texas, in
the last four years, has lost ground
to ita principal competing states
in its share of t^ie national pro
duct, and listed a number of ex
amples in which other state# are
gradually easing ahead of Texas
in certain areas.
"Ixiuisiana is moving ahead in
petrochemicals while Minnesota,
and possibly Arkansas, are moving
ahead in aluminum,” he exclaimed
He pointed out that Texas is
lagging behind other states in nu
clear science. "It ha* lieen an
nounced that A4M ha* plans for a
nuclear science center in the near
future Pennsylvania has had a nu
clear science center for six years,"
he said.
