Jimmy Smith Trained in Japan Sqd. 5 Sophomore Holds Top Japanese Judo Belt By JORCALLICOATTK BatUttaa Staff Writer Jimmy Smith. Squadron 6 aoph- omoru, is master of one of the most dangerous hobbles in Japan —Aikido. Aikido is a type of judo which Is tautht in Japan primarily for self-defense purpose* It can’t be classified as a sport because It has no set rules or ethics to follow. The ctoeeet training te It i* Amer ica are self-defense tactics taught the Marines The main objective of Aikido is to stop an attacker— for good. Jimmy holds the first degree black belt He took instructions two hours a day for two years before qualifying for his belt. Dur ing the last six months of practice he made four appearances all over Japan, one in Kodokan, world Judo headquarters. “The main tactics of Aikido are kicks and blows which are inflicted to any part of the body, ,, Jimmy said. “It doesn’t take great Strength, but instead concentrated energy in one part of the body The object ia to uae the opponent's own momentum to bring him down.’’ During practice sessions oppon ents use hunting knives, with min imum blade lengths of six inches, and try to disarm each other. Peo ple have been seriously cut and even killed by knife wounds or blows inflicted in practice, but Jimmy's most serious injury was two broken ribs. Before each match Jimmy goes through an extensive warmup per iod which consists of practicing falls and stretching arms and legs in all directions He said, “One good exercise is to put your foot behind your head, which ia very difficult for most people.’’ In qualifying for a belt the op ponents only feint blows An in structor is present to decide whe ther the blows are fatal or not Jimmy has a program set up in hia outfit where he is teaching the freahmen basic techniques of Judo. «r iwm What's Cooking - ;• i ell s The following organizations will neet ton ight: 7:1s p m.
