‘IN ITS 50TH YEAR OF SERVING TEXAS AGGIES’
Bell Seeks Sluggers
Coach Beau Bell sent his charges'*'
through batting practice yesterday,
trying to find the Cadet nine that
will push aci'oss enough runs to
down the TCU Horned Frogs this
weekend hi Kyle Field.
Aggie rightfielder Jim Smother-
man, who started the season as a
top hitter then dropped to a below
average .184, looked like he may
be back to his old form again, ac
cording to Bell.
Along with Smotherman, Bell is
looking for heavy hitters in Bo
Paradowski and Gary Herrington.
Pai'adowski started the season as a
pitcher and then moved to first
baseman. In the last two games he
hit .500.
Herrington has hit at a steady
pace all season and goes in today’s
game with a .324 batting average.
Battery mate for Herrington in
today’s tilt is junior righthander
Wayne Sehaper. The lanky hurler
pitched his first conference game
last Saturday when he beat SMU
4-0, moving the Farmers into a
tie for second place in the con
ference race.
The Aggies will face TCU again
tomorrow with Toby Newton on
the mound. The senior lefthander
pitched against Texas Tech Tues
day, striking out 17 batters in
seven innings. Game time Satur
day is 2 p. m.
Other baseball action for the
weekend will be Fish game with
Allen Academy in Travis Park at
8 p. m. Joe Thompson will be on
the mound for the Fish.

The Aggie nine starts down the
home stretch this weekend in the
Southwest Conference baseball
face with six games remaining on
the slate and two big games be
hind the league leading Texas Long
horns.
Seventeen days remain in the
season and the Cadets still have
to face the top of the conference
batting roster, Texas, TCU and
Rice, and beat them to cop the
pennant.
On paper, the Farmers look like
they might go down swinging.
The Ags don’t have a man in the
top ten in the batting statistics,
and only catcher Gary Herrington
in the top twenty. The plow boys
sit on the next to bottom rung in
team batting—only the Frogs are
lower.
In the fielding department Coach

average. The team’s bright spot
lies in its pitching staff. Wayne
Sehaper and Percy Sanderson
stand two-three in the conference
list of hurlers.
The further the season progres
ses the moundsmen grow stronger
and the sluggers batting averages
shrink smaller. The Aggies have
a .218 in the hitting department
for conference games thru April
21.
If the Ags can duplicate the ’55
teams pennant winning stretch, and
IF they can end their hitting slump,
the Farmers should come out of the
sci’amble with a flag in their mitts.
