The Battalion -?• College Btatlon (Bitito* County 1 ), Texa* PAGE 6 Tuesday, February 25, 1958 Residents, A&M Students Join In Observing Day Of Prayer A community-wide observance of the World Day of Prayer was held in College Station Friday, with A&M students and Consolidated School pupils pausing’ during class es for silent prayer. Climaxing the observance was a prayer serv ice at the Interfaith Chapel on the A&M campus sponsored by the College Station Council of Church Women. Church bells and the college whistle signaled the moment of silent prayer at 10 a.m. Vice President Earl Rudder of A&M and Mayor Ernest Langford had endorsed the observance and re quested faculty, students, and townspeople to pause for prayer at that time Friday. Mrs. W. D. Hardesty, chairman of Christian World Missions, was in charge of the chapel program, whose theme was “The Bread of Life.” Participating in the serv ice were the Mesdames Jack Keese, Wendell Nedderman, Bob Monk, Charles Haas, Charles Workman, Melvin Rotsch, Joe L. Pointevent, Bob Coopei'j and William O. Par ker. Ushers for the service were Mrs. Bob Andrews and Mrs. W. W- Mills. Mrs. Stewart Brown and Mrs. Ran Boswell were in charge of the guest book. Special music was provided by the Ladies Harmony Singers, an interest group of the A&M College Social Club, under the direction of Mrs. James Stewart. Mrs. C. W. Simmons accompanied the group who sang the anthem, “Let All the World in Every Corner Sing”; “O Lord Most Holy”, Mrs. Marvin Butler, soloist; and the “Seven- Fold Amen”. ,World Day of Prayer offerings go to help women and children all over the world. Church women have made possible vacation Bible schools for children in low-income farm communities, day care cen ters for children of migrant work ers, and “make-up schools” for migrant children who have no chance to attend regular classes. Overseas, 10 Union Christian Colleges and Universities in Asia and Africa are of interest to churchwomen, whose gifts con tribute to their support. Camer- oun College in French Equatorial Africa is the only Christian col lege for African women, while Kinnaird College is the only Chris tian college for women in Pakis tan. -rr— 4. ISisrrvr,. Kamm, dean of the Basic Division and Student Per sonnel Services, will be one of the leading participants in the 13th annual Conference on Higher Edu cation in Chicago March 2-5. Kamm will serve as recorder for the Monday session, entitled “By What Means Can the Quality and Quantity of Guidance Services, Particularly in the High Schools, Be Increased?” Some 1000 college and univer sity leaders are expected to attend the conference designed to discuss the problem of strengthening the quality of higher education in this age of satellites. These leaders will consider in creased opportunities for students, innovations in administration and improvement of teaching and new developments in the curriculum. In a general business meeting held at yesterday’s College Sta tion Lions Club luntheon meeting, a secretary’s report showed the Lions’ fund raising drives “highly successful”. Funds from the drives go to worthwhile community projects such as supplying glasses to under privileged children • with poor vis ion, sending local handicapped youngsters to the Lion-sponsored Crippled Children’s Camp at Kerr- ville and supporting other com munity projects. Social Whirl Agronomy Wives Club will meet at 7:30 tonight in the Brooks room of the YMCA. Guest speaker will be Mrs. Trudy McFarland who will speak on child development. Little Time Left For Car Inspections Less than two months are left ’ to have motor vehicles inspected, Col. Homer Garrison Jr., Texas Department of Public Safety Di rector, warned yesterday. Only 36 per cent of registered vehicles in Texas have been in spected thus far.
