i I PAGE 4 Thursday, February 6, 1958 Pistoleers Post Wins, Invite Newcomers On Sunday February 2, six of the Pistol Team members fired against 43 other shooters at the Bayou Pistol Club Matches in Houston with the A&M Club bringing home their share of the honors. Charles Benson won the 1st Expert class with his .45 cal. pistol and took 1st Expert aggre gate honors with an 803/900 score. Ferrald Belote was the first place winner for the Marksman class with a 273/300 with his cal. .22 pistol. Ray McKnight, Bill Hulburt and Ray Craig fired in the unclas- sified division with Hulburt win ning the 20-shot Slow Fire Match, Craig taking first place in the cal. .22 NMC match and McKnight winning the cal. .45 and aggregate honors for this division. This broke the school scoring record of 90 points set against Baylor in 1956. The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas Myers Rounds Staff With Michels, Smith Jim Myers, single wing exponent recently named head coach and director of athletics at A&M, completed his foot ball staff Monday by appointing John Michels, 27-year old former all-American guard at the University of Tennessee, and Elmer Smith, a former member of Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant’s Aggie staff the past four years, who had joined Bryant at Alabama. Michels will work with the guards while Smith will handle the centers and linebackers. Myers’ seven assistants now include Bud Sherrod, Russ Faulkinberry, Doug Bradley, Willie Zapalac, Bill Jones, Mich els and Smith. OSC InNearFiuture The A&M Bowling Club will Journey to Austin Saturday, Feb. 15, for a match with the University of Texas. This will be the fifth ,outing for the club. The starting time for the game will be 2 o’clock. Leading the first team will be Stan Workman with the team high average of 180. Joe Blieden, Bob Brown, Roger Bose, and Floyd Hardiman complete the first team. The second group has not been announced. On the following Sunday, the club will host Oklahoma State in the MSC lanes. These games also start at 2 p. m. and admission is free. If from Texas Tech, Jones from Middle Tennessee State and Faulkinberry and Bradley were on Myers’ staff at Iowa. Smith was one of the top candi dates for the head coaching job at Arkansas. He is a former head coach at Southern Arkansas State at Magnolia where his teams won two state championships in 1951- 52. He was a four sport letter- man at Hendrix College in Con way, Ark. Michels was a starting guard at Tennessee for three years and played in two Cotton Bowl games against "texas in 1951-53. The 195-pounder was one of the small est college linemen to play in pro fessional ball. He played defens ive end, linebacker and offensive guard for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1953. Spring training for the Aggie gridsters will begin the last part of April. Ernestine Russell, Michigan State co-ed gymnast from Windsor, Ont., has won the Canadian gym nastics title the past four years. Now $7.95 Sports Banquet Set For Feb. 15 James Aston, president of Re public National Bank of Dallas, will be the speaker at the annual Winter Sports banquet Feb. 15 honoring members of the Texas A&M football and cross-country squads. The dinner-dance will begip at 7 p.m. in Sbisa Hall. New Aggie coach and athletic director, Jim Myers, will be intro duced along with Earl Rudder, re cently appointed vice president of A&M College. Aston, captain of the 1931 Ag gie football team, was named re cently to the Silver Anniversary team selected by Sports Illustrated. Master of ceremonies for the affair will be Blackie Sherrod, sports director of the Dallas Times-Herald and a member of the Texas Sports Writers Assoc iation. Music for the dinner-dance will be furnished by the Bill Knight combo of Houston. Tickets to the banquet are $5 each and may be purchased at the A&M athletic department or Elli son’s pharmacy in College Station or Ridgecrest Pharmacy in Bryan.
