The longest nine-inning game in 1957 in the National League lasted three hours and 34 minutes. The rivals were the Chicago Cubs and Brooklyn Dodgers in Brooklyn on July 21. Myers Hires W Jones By The Associated Press Appointment of William “Bill” Jones of Middle Tennes see State College to the coach ing staff of Texas A&M was announced yesterday by Jim Myers, new athletic director and head football coach. Jones, 32, played offensive and defensive end at Vanderbilt in 1948 and 1949. Middle Tennessee was undefeated in 10 games in 1957. Jones is the fifth member of Myers’ staff. Others are Bud Sherrod, formerly of Texas Tech; Russ Faulkinberry and Doug Brad ley, formerly of Iowa State; and Willie Zapalac, a Texas A&M grad uate retained fx-om the Paul Bryant coaching staff. Sauer Sours On Baylor, Tries Iowa WACO, (A*)—George Sauer, ath letic director at Balyor University said yesterday he will fly to Ames, Iowa, Friday to be interviewed for the Iowa State football coaching job. Sauer said yesterday “I’m inter ested.” Asked if he missed active coach ing, he said, “I sure do.” Iowa State lost its football coach a week ago when Jim Myers shift ed to Texas A&M. Sauer became football coach and athletic director at Baylor in 1950, but relinquished the coaching job at the end of the 1955 season. T g X A 9 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Arkansas’ Razorbacks blasted the Aggies at Fayetteville Tuesday night and walked off with a 67-51 victory for their fifth straight Con ference win. The win put the University of Arkansas team in a threat position for the Southwest Conference bas ketball title which, if they make it, will be their first basketball title since 1941. A&M got the first basket, a jump shot by Neal Swisher, but Arkansas quickly gained a 14-4 lead, and the Aggies never saw daylight again. With 6-5 Wayne Dunn and 6-0 Fred Grim doing most of the dam age, the Porkers kept widening the gap until the spread was 21 points midway in the second half. Then Coach Glenn Rose sent in the second team. The regulars re turned as soon as A&M cut the margin to 14. , Grim continued his role as Ar kansas’ leading scorer with 18 points. Larry Grisham, a 6-3 jump shot artist, contributed 12 and Dunn 10. Archie Carroll was A&M’s top pointmaker with 15. Swisher, who had 10, was the only other Aggie to break into the double figures. .. The Porkers cooled off in the second half and wound up with a .410 per centage for the night. The Porkers also had the upper hand on the backboards with 49 re bounds to 37 for the taller Aggies.
