Newsmen Gather Awaiting Decision
While sinister happenings were going on any announcement—which finally came at
behind the two large oaken doors, members 4:10. Jim Myers is the. new Aggie coach,
of the press waited for an announcement—
Rifle Teams Place Third
In Two Conference Meets
The Texas A&M rifle team has
tied for third place in the South
west Conference, and will compete
in a postal match -with Rice Insti
tute on February 11 to break the
tie and determine the winner of
the third spot.
Baylor captured first place, with
Texas Christian following in
second.
In other rifle action, the five-
man rifle team of the University of
Texas ROTC Engineer unit won
first place in the Fourth Army
phase of the Department of the
Army’s Society of American Mili
tary Engineers Rifle Competition
for 1957-58, Fourth U. S. Army
headquarters has annnounced.
The Texas team scored 1835 out
of a possible 2000. Other scores
were Rice Institute 1824 and A&M
College 1707.
Following a comparison of aggre
gate scores from other continental
Army areas, the Adjutant Gen
eral of the Department of the Army
will announce the national winner
in March.
In the Engineer competition, in
dividuals fire 10 rounds each at
prone, sitting, kneeling and stand
ing positions.
Myers Eager; Awaits
Chance As “Loyal Ag
Coach Jim Myers of Iowa State,
named as head football coach and
athletic director at Texas A&M,
• said last night he was overwhelmed
with telegrams and telephone calls
from Aggieland.
“I’m looking forward to being
a loyal Aggie,” Myers commented.
“I’ve always had a soft spot
for Texas A&M since I was a kid
in the days of John Kimbrough,”
he said. Myers referred to the
Aggie backfield man who was
named The Associated Press All-
America in 1939 and 1940.
“There have been a lot of peo
ple hei’e at Iowa State Who’ve
been good to me,” Myers said.
“But I couldn’t let that enter into
my decision.”
He referred to Texas A&M as
a “terrific school” with possibili
ties for an outstanding athletic
program that are “real good.”
Myers said he told Iowa State
officials about 3:30 p. m. today
- that he was leaving.
the Aggie student campaign to get
Myers.
“They were dynamic, impres
sive young men with a sparkle in
their eye and they sold me, really,”
he said.
News of Myers’ decision to leave,
which gave Iowa State the problem
of looking for a new football coach,
broke so suddenly that few were
prepared for it.
Dwight Nichols, tailback of the
1957 Iowa State team and the only
sophomore named on last year’s
all-Big Eight team, said he had
nothing against Myers for quitting
here.
