poetry Society Meets Monday For Annual Christmas Dinner B Traditional Christmas dinner for members of the Poetry Society of Jh-yan-College Station and their guests was held Monday evening at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Gor don Watts. Co-hostess was Mrs. R. R. Lancaster. ■ Arrangements of red carnations, green boughs and handcarved an gels, the work of Mrs. Lancaster, brightened the living room. ■ The dining table was centered with a snowy Christmas tree flanked by red candles. The din ner was served buffet style, and the guests sat at card tables, each centered by a red carnation and ferns. ■ Attending with the hostesses y.ere Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. McNeill Drum- v. right, Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Nance, Mr. and Mrs. Vic Lindley, Dr. and Mrs. F. L. Thomas, Mrs. Mil- ton Franklin, Mrs. B. F. Vance, Mrs. Inez MacKay, Mrs. John Ash ton, Miss Sarah Watts, Miss Eliza beth Woods, Dr. Samuel Asbury, and Vic Wiening. ■ Committee in charge of all ar- ifengements was composed of Mrs. B. F. Vance, chairman, and the Mesdames McNeill Drumwright and J. M. Nance. E Mrs. Dan Hudson, president, re ported that her book, “Raphael, the Herald Angel,” is now in its fourth edition. Jessie Merle Frank lin reported the sale of two poems, one to the “Progressive Farmer” and the other to “Home Life.” Christmas poems only were pre sented for judging. Vic Lindley, reader and critic, explained the dif ferences between carols, hymns and anthems. Only the popular vote was ta ken, giving first place to “A Christmas Message” by Mrs. J. H. Caddess; second to “Love These Grieved Ones, Jesus, Master” by Jessie Merle Franklin, and third, a tie between “We Celebrate His Birthday” by Stella Stewart and “The Glad News of Christmas” by Mabel Clare Thomas. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of a carol, “The Meaning of Christmas,” written by Mabel Clare Thomas, with music by Beryl Baty. The carol was sung by the members with Miss Sarah Watts at the piano. The evening ended with the guests grouped around the piano, singing Christmas songs. Next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 13, when J. Frank Peirce of the A&M English Department will be guest critic. Aggies Help In Dallas YMCA Regional Camp The A&M YMCA participa ted in a conference Dec. 6-8, for the larger colleges of the Southwest region at the Dal las Kiwanis “Y” Camp. Theme of the confex-ence was the “World Responsibility of the Christian Citizen” and the main speaker was Dr. C. Kistiakowsky, Har- vard University scientist on the President’s Advisory Committee, will give a graduate lecture in the Chemistry Lecture Room Thurs day at 8 p .m. Sponsored by the Robert A. Welch Foundation, Kistiakowsky will speak on the subject “Shock and Detonation Waves”, which should be of interest to students in chemistry, physics, and the various fields of engineexing. Kistiakowsky, born in Kiev, Rus sia, became a natux-alized citizen of the United States in 1933. He has served on the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Sciences and the Philosophical Society. His research has been in the field of chemical kinetics, thermody namics of organic molecules, mole cular spectroscopy and explosives and explosions. Lions Club Hears Junior High Choir Giving their first performance of the year, the Consolidated Junior High School Choir sang a selection of numbers for the Col lege Station Lions Monday at their weekly luncheon. The choir, directed by Frank C. Coulter, sang two Christmas carols and three other special arrange ments. The group is composed of sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys. M. L. (Red) Cashion reported that the Lions’ Christmas tree sale was progressing “very nicely”, bxit said there were plenty of trees of all sizes left for anyone still xxeed- ing one. The trees ai’e being sold at the vacant Phillipps 66 service station on Highway 6, across from A&M’s East Gate. Pioceeds fi-om the sales go to oi’ganizations such as the Boy Scouts, Band Boosters and the Kerrville Crippled Childrens’ Camp. Glen Wilkerson, CHS senior, made a short talk to the Lions ask ing them to contribute generously to the Christmas Seal drive now underway. The drive is designed to x-aise money for x-esearch in tubex-- culosis and treatment of TB vic tims. Social Whirl An evening of Christmas cax-ols was enjoyed by members of the Aggie Wives Council when they met Monday in the YMCA. Mrs. Robert B. Kamm, sponsor of the council, accompanied the group at the piano, and also entertained with a solo.
