The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas Friday, November 8, 1957 PAGE 5 Tom Koenig Koenig, 190-pound SMU junior from Dallas, played more than any other sophomore last year. He was the number one Mustang in unassisted tackles with a total of 23 and second in total tackles accredited with 72. Kentucky’s Gentleman Jim Jim Stanley, 6-1, 200-pounder, starting left guard from Lynch, Kentucky, has been an outstanding performer all season in the nation’s best line. Stanley, first switched to left tackle behind Charley Krueger, has been returned to his old slot, much to his appreciation. When George Sisler batted .407 for the 1920 St. Louis Browns, he hit .448 during the last month of the season. Roger: Future Mining Engineer? You’d like Roger. He’s bright and friendly — and you ought to see him build things in the backyard, fix things around the house. He can grow 1 up to become a great engineer, a great help to his country if he gets the education he deserves. But in too many communi ties the Rogers aren’t getting it. The Ponies hit their peak last week staging a major upset of the Texas Longhorns. At this time, the Mustangs have a 1-1 record in conference play, losing only to the Rice Owls. Bill Meek’s Mustangs opened the season with a bang by downing California’s Golden Bears and ty ing awesome Georgia Tech, 0-0. They have sufxercu mic. intersec tional defeat to the University of Missouri. The Cadets are riding high, rank ed at the top of the national ra tings. Their winning streak was extended to 17 last Saturday when they downed Arkansas in a battle- royal in Fayetteville, 7-6. Both teams will be at near full strength for the clash, with the Aggies’ Darrel Brown still on the doubtful list. The Pony line is young and fast. They are not as beefy as the Ag gies forward wall, but have plenty of speed. In Coach Paul Bryant’s estimation, “They’re big enough.” Actually the small, quick line is characteristic of Bill Meek’s teams. The heftiest man in the Pony line is Lee Yokum, the right tackle who tips the scales at 214 pounds. He was able to shed a few excess pounds at the beginning of the season, reaching a good “playing weight” against Texas last week. Guard Gary Weber is the tiniest in the line, weighing a mere 189 pounds; only one pound less than the other guard Tom Koenig. Cen ter Raleigh Harvey also weights 190. The Mustangs were elated with the “coming around” of soph quar terback Don Meredith, who staged a one-man show in the defeat of the Texas Longhorns last week. At the beginning of the season, Meek mourned the lack of a good signal-caller, but they seem to have found one in Meredith. He’s 6-3, 180 and was the outstanding fresh man player in the conference last year. So great is his promise that he has been compared with Larfy Isbell in his early playing days at Baylor. To quote from a news source, “Meredith is cool and calculating— the type of quarterback who looks right at you and then runs at you. He runs the position with nom chalance and insolence.” For the last three weeks, the Aggies have stuffed their efforts into one short burst of power— which has proven sufficient to win. However, last week against SMU, Texas contributed 100 per cent effort for one quarter and lost to the Ponies, who played the other three quarters with enough authority to win. The old axiom will always hold true, “The team wanting this, game the most will win.” Attention Aggies! LEON B.
