Red Sox And Orioles Tangle For Crown rn*3 iSunuiion Co/lege otatiun {Jbruzua L,oun(y/, Ivxut, Thursday, July IS, 1957 PAGI5 3 Orioles Sew Last Half Title By MAURICE OLIAN i Wayne Smith’s high-flying Orioles, led by a suddenly aroused offensive attack paced by Jimmy Nail’s tremendous late-season surge, have sewed up the second-half title of the College Station Tattle League and now await the first-half champs, Ken Midkiff’s Red Sox, in a play-off for the full season crown. Before the Orioles and Red Sox can match their high- powered offensive might against each other Monday at 7:30 p.m., there remains the formality of tomorrow night’s twin-bill in which the Red Sox tangle with the White Sox at 5:30 and the Orioles collide with the Senators at 7:30 to conclude the regular season schedule of the American League South. First Annual CS Tennis Tourney Underway Soon After Monday night’s championship-deciding game at the College Station Little League Park, brief ceremo nies -will feature the presentation of the Jack Fugate Sportsmanship Award and also the team trophy. Following these presentations, the 14 members of the American League South All-Star team will be recognized with all-star pins. Meanwhile, in the College Sta tion Minor Little League, any of three teams could either win out right, or share a portion of the second-half championship. At the present time, the Pirates hold a shaky lead with their 4-1 mark being one game ahead of the Cubs and Indians, each having a 3-2 record. Tonight’s double-header—Pirates vs. Indians and Cubs vs. Dodgers •—holds the key to the title. If the Pirates down Manuel Garcia’s Indians, the first-half winners who are presently crippled minus the services of most of their regulars, then the Bugs will hold the second- half pennant. Any combination is possible, however, if the Indians win tonight. Big Nail, who has been the pos sessor of a blazing bat during the past 10 days, has taken a healthy lead in the race for individual bat ting honors and appears to be a fairly safe bet to succeed Joe Olian as American League South batting champion. Nail, at an even .500 through Monday’s games, has a comfortable lead over Dennis Muth, of the Red Sox, who is hit ting .420. Dominating the loop’s offensive statistics presently, Nail also leads the league in slugging percentage, .949; in total bases, 47; in home runs, 7; in runs-batted-in, 28, and shares the lead in base hits, 21 and in runs scored, 19. Muth also has 21 base knocks, while the Orioles’ Les Palmer and the Senators’ Jody Rush each has scored 19 runs. In two-base hits, the pace-setter is Muth, and in triples, the leaders are a pair of Red Sox, Jack Fugate and Hubert Hearne. Jimbo Bevans, of the White Sox, has pilfered the most bases, seven. Minor Little League batting leaders are three members of the slugging Pirates—Scotty Manning, .615; Larry Hayes, .583 and David Krause, .583. Horace Schaffer, instructor for the local summer tennis program, announced details earlier this week for the first anndal College Sta tion Recreation Council Tennis Tournament to be held Monday, July 29, through Saturday, Au gust 3. Any resident of Brazos County is eligible to compete in the tour nament, which is to be held on the A&M Concrete Tennis Courts (lo cated south of Kyle Field). Tournament Director Schaffer, who is also the A&M Consolidated tennis coach, announced that rib bons will be awarded to the champ ions and the runners-up in each of the meet’s 16 divisions. The rains came and sent two bands and a drill team scurrying for cover. Others splashed on, led by musicians from another high school hand. Half of them got across the railroad tracks but the others had to wait-—a train came along. The stragglers finally caught up and all went well until two horses, frightened by the music, reared and broke their harness. Another delay. Spectators said it was the most interesting parade ever seen.
