George Mehaffey, probably the finest eager ever to
come out of A&M, inked a contract with the St. Louis Hawks
of the National Basketball Association yesterday.
Mehaffey, the Houston St. Thomas graduate who cap
tained the 1956-57 Aggie quintet, was a unanimous all-South-
west Conference second team choice and scored 300 points
for the season, second high
for A&M despite injuries that
kept him out of four games.
“I feel very lucky that I’m
getting the opportunity to
play with the Hawks, whom I
consider the best team in the
NBA,” said Mehaffey. “It’ll be
hard to make the team because
their personnel doesn’t graduate
like they do in college, but they
have promised me every opportu
nity and it will be left up to my
ability.”

“We saw him in the East-West
game,” reported Hawk Publicity
Director Marty Blake, “a n d
thought they didn’t use him
enough.”
“We thought he was the out
standing player in the game for
the time he played. He scored
three baskets, rebounded and hus

Mehaffey will join the Hawks in
St. Louis for the opening- of their
training camp September 20.
“I really want to express my
gratitude to Coach Loeffler for his
fine coaching which enabled me to
have this opportunity,” emphasized
Mehaffey. “He has meant a lot
to me and has been a tremendous
influence in my basketball devel
opment. He made me conscious
of mistakes that I made and told
me what I should do to correct
them at crucial times. Loeffler
is the greatest coach I’ve ever-
known.”

Corps Baseball Sets
Finals in Travis Park
By FRED MEURER
Corps baseball, successful for the first time at A&M this
spring, will come to a booming finish next Tuesday night
in Bryan’s Travis Park when the winners of the Air Force and
Army Leagues meet in the championship “Tenth Man Bowl.”
Representing the Army in the bowl will be the First Reg
iment, Third Battalion, composed of Engineer, Ordnance and
Transportation Corps outfits,
who finished regular play
with a perfect 6-0 record. The
consolidated Air Force-Army
Band placed second in the
standing with a 4-2 record.
Things aren’t that simple over
in the Air Force League. Dead
locked for first place 1 at the end
of regular play are the 5th and
7th Groups, each owning a 5-1 re
cord. A play-off game to decide
the pennant winner will be play
ed tonight at 8 in Travis Park.
This game, and the championship
game nexf week, will go a full sev
en innings with no time limit.
Both groups played their final
game against the 6th Group, with
the 5th shutting them ou t last
week, 5-0, and the 7th tying things
up by topping them 4-1 Tuesday
night.
In their only encounter this year,
the 5th Group stomped the 7th
Group, 8-3, so the play-off game
is also a revenge match.
This year’s baseball program
was originally scheduled to go two
rounds in each league, but a late
start, foul weather and too many
holidays forced play to be limited
to one round.
Admission to the championship
game Tuesday will be ten cents,
with proceeds to be stashed away
for next year’s equipment. Friday
night’s game will be free.
Melvin Driskill, originator of
1957 Corps Baseball, announced a
barbecue to thank umpires, coaches
and managers sometime next week.
Further announcements will be
niade previous to that time.
King, Court Here Saturday
After being postponed twice and
delayed more than a week, the
King and His Court may finally
make an appearance at A&M—the
game is scheduled tomorrow at
7:30 p.m. on the lighted softball
diamond.

loves to cut loose and cover the miles!
If you’re looking for a real “escape artist,”
a car that loves to step out and get
away from it all—well, it just happens
that Chevy was born with that urge.
If there ever was a car that loved to
cut loose and cover the miles, it’s this
one. Yet it’s so easy to handle that it
even makes city traffic seem a bit
lighter and parking places a bit bigger.
Chevy’s pretty easygoing out on the
highway too. Not pokey. Far from it.
You find, for example, there isn’t a hill
around that can make it breathe hard
not with Chevrolet’s high-perform
ance V8 on the pulling end. You’ve got
up to 245* horsepower here for the
biggest helping of driving pleasure found
in the low-price field!
Chevy’s new Positraction rear axle
(optional at extra cost) adds still more
pleasure. It delivers greater power to
the wheel that grips, not the wheel that
slips. You have surer control and better
traction on any road surface.
