Corps Baseball
Slate Moving Well
Melvin Driskill, founder of the newly-established Corps
Baseball Leagues, happily reported Monday that the schedule
was moving along at a good pace.
Driskill, whose brain-storm hit A&M’s campus with the
force of a tornado, released the standings in the Air Force
and Army leagues, complete through Friday.
In Friday’s games, the 6th
- ;
Group edged the 3rd Group,
4-3, while the 5th Group
trounced the 7th Group, 8-5.
Carl Christmas, James Grif-
f?fth, and Bill Frost led their
mates in the 6th Group’s victory
over their opponents. Jim Pruitt
collected a pair of singles for the
losers.
Bobby Singer pitched the 5th
Group to their win in a wild con
test which found the victors getting
only three hits, singles by Haddon
Winkler, A1 Zambrano, and Jerry
Ford.
Driskill expressed his apprecia-
ball coach, for allowing the Corps
to use the fish diamond for a make
up game Friday.

A&M’s Don Watson Joins
Va. Tech Coaching Staff
A&M’s great little halfback,
Don Watson, joined the staff
of Virginia Tech last week as
assistant football coach, ac
cording to Frank Moseley,
head grid coach and athletic di
rector.
Watson, the 150-pounder who
personally beat TCU twice, was a
standout in the Blue-Gray game
at Montgomery, Ala., last Decem
ber as well as making a number
of all-Southwest Conference sec
ond teams.

Tech opened Spring training last
Wednesday with Watson joining
Macauley McEver, Alf Satterfield,,
Buck ' Chapman, Dick Redding,
Chuck Noe and Red Laird on the
staff. He will receive his B.A.
degree in education in June.
“Having been associated with
Coach (Paul) Bryant for many
years, I know that few people re
ceive such a high recommendation
as he gave Don, and I know that
he will be a great help to our
backs,” said Coach Moseley. “We
are especially pleased that he was
able to arrive in time for Spring
training.”
Watson, the Franklin speedster,
will long be remembered for his
title-saving interception of Chuck
Curtis’ pass in the A&M end zone
early in the fourth quarter of the
Aggies’ 7-6 victory over TCU.

Weightlifters Bid
For Recognition
One of A&M’s little-heard-of teams, or rather “clubs”,
the weightlifters, will be bidding for a taste of recognition
Saturday when they travel to Houston to match their talents
against an array of competition at the Southern United
States YMCA and AAU weightlifting meet.
About 70 muscle-men will participate in the tournament.
Other than A&M, such institu
tions as Texas University,
Rice Institute and Louisiana
State University—which held
the Junior National Cham
pionship two years ago—are enter
ed, along with various YMCA
clubs and individual entries.
The Aggies have entered two
tournaments thus far this year,
winning one and placing second in
the other.
Their first outing, in January’s
Houston Odd-Lift contest, found
them being nosed out by one point
at the hands of Houston’s. South-
side Lifting Club. On March 16,
they walked away from the Region
HI meet in Houston with a decisive
victory. A&M took four first-place
and one second-place titles
The Ags were scheduled to enter
the state tournament in Waco on
March 30, but the self-supported
and coached club was not able to
make the necessary arrangements.
