Once again led by a trio of sopho mores, the Aggies of Coach Ken Loeffler won their second South west Conference game of the 1957 season and their sixth of the year. With five players hitting in double figures, the Cadets came from a one-point deficit at the intermission to pull away to a six- point lead, then held on to stand off the desperate Bear bid in the final two minutes. Neil Swisher, certainly one of the finest sophs in league history, tied Baylor’s Gene McCarley and Tom Kelly for high-point honors with 17. Ernie Turner turned in his finest game with 15 points fol lowed by Jim McNichol, George Mehaffey and Ted Harrod with 10 each. McNichol, who just recently fought his way into the top five Aggie cagers, played a terrific de fensive game, picking off 18 im portant rebounds and blocking at least a half a dozen Baylor shots. McNichol, 6-6 soph from Phila delphia, dropped six of six at tempted free throws that tied the game twice and sent A&M into the lead another time. The lead changed hands nine REBOUND FOR A&M—Sophomore Jim McNichol (70) goes high for one of his 18 rebounds in A&M”s 64-61 vic tory over the Bears in White Coliseum last Saturday night. McNichol played his finest collegiate game, scoring 10 points and knocking aside a half dozen Baylor shots. Watching for A&M are Ernie Turner (77) and George Mehaffey (55) while Tom Kelly (6) looks on for the Bears. Co. product of Fish Edge Cubs In Overtime By JAMES CARRELL Wayne Lawrence’s driving lay-up with 1:39 left proved to be the margin of victory as the Texas A&M Fish edged the Baylor Cubs 74 to 72 in Saturday night’s thrilling over time basketball tilt in White Coliseum. The A&M victory avenged an earlier 99-66 loss to the Cubs in Waco. Trailing 32-30 at halftime, the Fish tied it up at 32-32 and with 4:28 elapsed in the second period a free throw by Dave Corson put the Fish into a 39-38 lead which they never relinquished until Bob Turner’s long set shot with 11 seconds remaining in the regulation game tied the score at 65-64, forcing the overtime period. The A&M freshman held as large a lead as six points in the second half, but with Bay- tor applying a full-court press, the Fish seemed to lose poise, as personal fouls g-ave the Cubs free throws which they used to catch up. Regaining composure, the Fish solved the Cub press with long passes to Lawrence and James An derson, threatening to rout the Baylor visitors, holding a 74-68 lead with 1:39 left in overtime. A&M owned a 62-56 lead with 1:16 remaining when the Bears put on a desperation full-court press and pulled to 62-61 with 34 seconds to go, but Jerry Mallett fouled Swisher in the final five seconds and the Victoria ace meshed both shots. Baylor held their largest margin, 33-26, with 1:22 left in the first half, but McNichol’s tip-in, Swish er’s jump shot and two free throws by McNichol brought the score to 33-32 at the intermission. Mehaffey reinjured his ankle and will not play tonight in Dallas. The Houston senior brought his season total to 298 Saturday, but Swisher’s 17 put him past the cage captain in the league scoring standings, 119-116.
