Although Oklahoma earned 92 first place votes among the 159 ballots from sports writers and sportscasters and Tennessee received 58 first, the point total gave the Vols the nod. Point totals are figured on the basis of 10 for first, nine for second and so on down to one point for a tenth place vote. On that system, Tennessee rolled up 1,446 points to Oklaho ma’s 1,444 points. Michigan State in third place had 993 points. Despite Oklahoma’s 44-0 romp over Iowa State for its 37th straight victory, Ten nessee drew more attention from the voters by its 6-0 vic tory over Georgia Tech in the At lanta struggle of the unbeatens.
