The Battalion .... College Station (Brazos County), Texas Thursday, September 13, 1956 PAak g Tigers, Mustangs Clash Tomorrow Night at 8 By MAURICE OLIAN CHS Sports Correspondent After dropping- their opener to Cleveland 33-13, the A&M Consolidated Tigers attempt to even their record to morrow night when the Madisonville Mustangs invade Tiger Field for an 8 p.m. clash. Coaches Horace Schaffer and Ed (Pee-Wee) Logan have been stressing defense work for their crew this week. The CHS defense looked bad in the Cleveland defeat, relinquishing 359 yards and 21 first downs (including 243 yards in the first half, when the winners held a 26-6 lead). Tiger backs have also been getting their share of work this week after losing the pigskin nine times due to fumbles in the season opener. Head skipper Schaffer plans'^ to start the following group tomorrow: LE — Dan Davis, 145, Sr.; LT—James Couch, 146, Sr.; LG—Garland An drews, 160, Sr.; C—David Mc- Neely, 154; Jr.; RG—Mike Walton, 192, Jr. or Brenner Sayers, 125, Fr.; RT — Pete Rodriguez, 152, 4oph.; RE—Jim Wright, 152, Fr.; QB—Alton Arnold, 142, soph.; LHB—Bill Hall, 146, Sr.; RHB— John Martinez, 118, Fr. and FB— Bill Kavanaugh, 160, Jr. Following last week’s action, in which all of the District 23-AA teams opened the grid season, with the exception of the potent Nava- sota Rattlers, Kavanaugh leads the loop in rushing with a net gain of 107 yards. Bill Hall’s 61 yards places him fourth in the conference behind a pair of Bellville backs, who have 78 and 74 yards respec tively. Kavanaugh is also tops in aver age yards gained per carry with his flashy 9.73, which is trailed by the 8.67 of Caldwell’s Joe Tadaro. Results of the games played by other District 23-AA teams last week were as follows: BELLE VILLE gave up only four first downs in blanking Wharton 13-0; CALDWELL allowed a similar number of downs as they bounced Hearne 19-7; CYPRESS - FAIR BANKS bowed to Humble 13-0 Und had a net gain of only 55 yards fc’hen the game was called early in Jhe third quarter due to light fail ure. Buffs Win, Cats Clubbed Dallas smashed Fort Worth 10-0 to take a 2-up lead in their Texas League playoff last night. At the same time Houston was squaring the series with Tulsa at one victory apiece. The Buffs beat the Oilers 7-1 behind the 6-hit pitching of Bob Mabe. Basilic Beats Champ Saxton SYRACUSE, N. Y., 05>>—Carmen Basilic split Johnny Saxton’s lip and raked his body and head with wicked punches last night to re capture the world welter - weight title tonight on a technical knock out in 1:31 of the ninth round of a bloody rout at War Memorial Auditorium. The craggy - faced, ex-Marine from nearby Canastota knelt and blessed himself in mid-ring after Referee A1 Berl stopped the unev en struggle with Saxton careening along the ropes near a neutral corner.' Tears flowed from Car man’s eyes as he tasted ample revenge for the loss of his title at Chicago last March 14 when' he claimed he was “robbed”. Frogs, Ags, Bears Look Good in SWC By HAROLD V. RATLIFF DALLAS, CP)—Champions sel dom repeat and the favorite al most never comes through in the Southwest Conference but that fact didn’t keep the football critics from picking Texas Christian. The writ ers figured they couldn’t go on for ever being wrong and besides TCU has what it takes to upset tradi tion. Even Coach Abe Martin admits that his Horned Frogs should be top-rated, although he pointed out that the team picked last year - - Rice-wound up last with the team that was supposed to fight it out with Rice for the title-£>outhern ^ac4-to-ScW Im. Texas Christian, relegated to fifth, romped in with the crown. TCU’s Finest But Texas Christian has the most experienced sqmul since 19.32 when the Frogs were undefeated and‘ it Could be the finest team in TCU history. Eleven seniors will start the games and there are plenty of vet erans backing them up. All-Amer ica Jim Swink looks as good as ever. Chuck Curtis is considered the best quarterback in the league and the line is big, tough and deep. General opinoin is that if Texas Christian doesn’t win it, either Texas A&M or Baylor will. Aggies Strong Coach Paul Bryant has 20 letter- men back from last season’s sec ond-place Aggies and the team is equipped with strong running, adept passing and plenty of re serve strength. The element of sur prise will be gone, however. The Aggies weren’t expected to do much last season and the race was almost over before anybody realized they were doing it. Baylor comes up with something it hasn’t had in the past five years —ample reserve strength. It also has three fine quarterbacks. The squad seeps with experience and powe-r and this time the Golden Bears can start the season with the fellow they depended upon for two years, only to have to play halfway through without him— Doyle Traylor. Traylor, who missed a lot of time because of broken bones, is sound and rugged. And Del Shofner, who was the conference sensation as a sophomore but did little last season because of a lame ankle, is back in top shape after a season of sprint ing in track. Passing Talent Texas will have the two most talented passers in the league in Joe Clements and sophomore Vince Matthews, and it still has Walt Fondren, one of the most versatile backs in the country. The Long horns should boast a high—scor ing attack but it’s keeping the other team from following suit that’s giving the coaches most concern. Arkansas has 20 lettermen, 13 of them linemen. It figures to have more finesse, thus be stronger of fensively, and the defense looks good. Coack Jack Mitchell thinks he has about the two best quarter backs around in George Walker and Don Christian. Southern Methodist and Rice are locked in a tight fight to see which is picked for the cellar. SMU had a lot of big fellows last season but they didn’t move very well. Few of them are back and while the team will have more spieed and agility it is one of the least experienced in SMU history. Rice couldn’t go anywhere but up since the Owls were a flat, vic tory-less last in 1955. There are only 16 lettermen and they don’t have enough experience to be rated as veterans. The team will be young and green but it’ll have speed.
