Aggie Tankers To Compete
In SWC Relays At Houston
‘Coach of Year’
Guest Speaker
At Athletic Fete
Michigan S t a t e’s Hugh
(Duff y) Dougherty, 1955
Coach of the Year and head
coach of the Spartan 1956
Rose Bowl champions, will be
the speaker at the annual football-
er-oss country dinner-dance in Sbisa
Moss Hall Saturday night.
Dougherty’s superb coaching led
the Spartans to the runner-up spot
in the Big Ten Conference, losing
only to the Michigan Wolverines
in regular season play. Ohio State,
Big Ten champs, were ineligible
for the Rose Bowl, so Michigan
State made the trip, edging the
UCLA Bruins, 17-14, on a field
goal in the last seven seconds.
C. N. (Newt) Hielscher, former
A&M professor now in the insur
ance business in Shreveport, will be
the master of ceremonies at the
dinner, which will begin at 7 p.m.
The Pat Larson Quintette, with
Lois Larson and the Aggieland Or
chestra, will furnish music for the
dance'.
Tickets are on sale at the Memo
rial Student Center, the Athletic
Department, Black’s and Aggieland
pharmacies in College and Canady’s

Fresh from a season-opening vic
tory over Northwestern Louisiana
College, A&M’s youthful swimmers
move into Houston Saturday to
meet Rice, SMU and the University
of Texas in the Southwest Confer

With only five of 26 splashers in
their last year of eligibility, the
Aggies swept to a 61-23 win ovei
the outmanned Louisianians, losing
but two first places.
A year ago only three points
separated the first three finishers
in the relays, with A&M a point
behind the winning Mustangs and
Texas only two behind the Aggies.
Swimming Coach Art Adamson is
taking 16 fin men to Houston to
compete in five relays and one
diving event.

Gloves novice title last year in Dallas. Willis, 126, was a
finalist in the novice class last year in Ft. Worth.
double six-man relay (backstroke,
breaststroke and freestyle repeated
in that order twice) and diving.
The divers’ points from each team
will be added to give a total which
will determine the winning team in
that event. There will be no indi
vidual races.
“We have a good chance of win
ning the meet,” said Coach Adam
son, “But I don’t know what the
other teams have.”
Ufer, Weick and Klipple set a
new 440-yard freestyle relay rec
ord for the Northwestem Louisiana
pool Saturday with the time of
3:45.5, and Okamoto took first in
both the 220 and 440-yard freestyle
events. Okamoto, from Sao Paulo,
Brazil, was the only Aggie to win
two firsts.

A-Field Trounces
A-AAA Gridmen
By JOE DAN BOYD
Sig Harris heaved a 50-yard
touchdown pass to Joe Howie on
the last play of A-Field’s 19-7
triumph over A-AAA in upperclass
man football yesterday. The play
came on a fake field goal try from
the mid-field stripe.
An earlier pass to Howie set
A-FA up on the AAA 5-yard line
and Harris plowed over the first
tally. This brought the artillery
team within a point of A-AAA’s
John Polk-led gridders who also
used the air route for their single
scoi’e.
Speedy Maivin Chlapek darted
in the open and grabbed a 40-yard
aerial from Harris to send A-FA
ahead 13-7. Bob Cook kicked the
extra point. Center Gene Jameson’s
defensive play sparked the team’s
hard-hitting line.
Jerry Cobb and Gerry Griffin led
deceptive Sqd. 18 team to a
thumping 13-0 victory over Sqd. 5.
Cobb went over from the 5-yard
line after a sustained ground drive.
Griffin crossed the double stripe
on a 30-yard jaunt. Quarterback
Clark Withers called plays for the
ground-minded Sqd. 18 team.
In other Class A games Sqd. 21
tripped Sqd. 13, 6-0 and Leggett
took a forfeit from Bizzell.
Adolph Boldt sank six baskets
